They instead got karma. They made enemies with Delta Airlines and Bombardier, highly doubt Delta will be purchasing any Boeing aircrafts any time soon. Now the release of the A330-800neo and A330-900neo threatens their 767 market, mind you they have no new technology or upgraded version of the 767 to answer Airbus back, and again Delta has just slapped Boeing in the face with an order of 25 A330neos to replace the 767s in it's fleet. Boeing is behind now.
There was no 767 market for the last couple of years, that was already wiped out by the A332 and A333. And supposedly already replaced within Boeing by the 787-8. The A330neo has nothing to do with this, especially considering the number of orders it got and the type of customers (most of the big A330ceo operators are not interested in the neo). There's a bigger thread from underneath in the form of the A321neo.

This news just shows that there still is a gap between the 737-10 and the 787-8. Boeing intends to fill it up with the 797 MOM from 2025. It's just likely that airlines are not willing to wait that long. So if Boeing can sell interim 767s as a quick fix temporary solution, there's no reason why Boeing shouldn't do it. They will probably even offer guaranteed buy-back deals for when the 797 comes into the market from 2025. Buying back these new 767, which Boeing will then market in the freighter conversion market where 767 conversions are very hot right now.

ps. Delta will always be looking for a very good deal. And I have no doubt that Boeing will offer Delta a very good price in the current narrow body MAX vs neo RFP. Delta just confirmed this week it's still between the MAX and the neo. There's nothing that suggests that they won't be ordering Boeing anymore. They will also have a very good look at the 797 MOM plane that Boeing is working on. I also don't see Delta's neo order a slap in the face of Boeing. You win some orders, you lose some orders, that's the way it goes in this duopoly. Delta is a rational company, they simply go for the best deal for them.

Did you read the link?

1. Airlines have approached Boeing about some brand new pax 767s on a line that ALREADY MAKING freighter 767s for Fedex, and the Air Force. Boeing makes money on the front and back end on this deal. Rumored deal is for 50-60 but when other airlines get wind on how cheap these R&D paid for 767s are, expect others to jump in line. The A330 may have lower fuel costs and carry more freight but a much cheaper 767 will make just as much or more money on a given route.

2. Delta is a corporation, not a human with emotions. If Boeing lays out a deal that completely wipes out Airbus's offer, then Delta is buying Boeing, pure and simple. Take the emotion out of this, if you want to see emotion, go to the shareholders meeting when some Hedge Funds grille the board on why they chose a higher Airbus bid based on "hurt feelings".

I don't expect that many more customers then just 1 or 2 larger customers.

This is the ramp up they are looking at right now, this creates about 120 slots between 2020 and 2025.

https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/...tt-united.html

1 From two jets a month to three per month by January 2020;

2 From three per month to three-and-a-half per month later in 2020;

3 From three-and-a-half per month to four per month by January 2021;

4 After that, Boeing's tentative plans call for a rate reduction to three per month by January 2025 and to two per month by June 2025.

Boeing will not go beyond the 4 per month as they simply don't have the space on the current line. Increasing the space only adds to the costs of restarting the production of the passenger version, they are not going to do that. I also think that they will try to keep it as simple as possible, offering just a base version of the 767-300ER. No variety of interiors or any other fancy options. If an airline wants something more they will offer the 787. And I expect that a part of the extra slots will also be sold as freighters. A large Amazon Prime orders keeps on spinning in the rumor circuit, there might also be other cargo airlines placing new orders.

But anyway, it will first have to materialize and that will only happen when United actually places an order and that is not certain.

Well it looks like Boeing will peddle the 767-300ER around the houses, to see if the potential customers are serious.

https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/...oanalysis.html

This lets them focus on the new SMALL aircraft that was ditched in favour of the 737 MAX ....now that the Airbus CS100 and Airbus CS300 have appeared right in their faces.

The NMA will probably be a 2030 era project if they restart the 767 line.

All this talk about customers (plural), the only thing that happened is that United ask for information on pricing for new built 767s. Boeing didn't reject it straight away, which gave room for analyst to go wild and see boundless opportunities.

They have the tooling...as in they did not scrap anything. Worth opening the door..a crack...to see what happens in the next few months.

If there is genuine demand it might be doable and help keep the freighter/tanker biz alive well into the 2020s.

Most of their 757 that already left the China Southern fleet in 2017 have been converted to freighters and have gone to China Postal Airlines. The remaining ones will probably also have the same fate, maybe for another Chinese cargo airline.

in 767 news...

The 767-2C, which is the 767 version that is the base of the KC-46 Tanker is now FAA certified. This is the commercial aviation certification, any commercial operator could now operate this version commercially. A 2nd certification specifically for the military equipment is needed before Boeing can deliver the 1st tanker to the USAF.

Boeing KC-46 Tanker Program Receives FAA Certification for its 767-2C Aircraft

Quote:
EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 21, 2017 – The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Boeing’s [NYSE: BA] KC-46 tanker program an Amended Type Certificate (ATC) for its core 767-2C aircraft configuration, verifying that the fundamental design of the KC-46 tanker is safe and reliable.

The 767-2C is a modified version of the company’s commercial 767 with revised structure, wiring and plumbing.

“This is a key building block for the KC-46 program in that it retires risk and builds confidence as we continue our test efforts and work to complete the next phase of certification,” said Mike Gibbons, Boeing KC-46A tanker vice president and program manager. “The U.S. Air Force is getting an efficient, reliable, combat capable tanker and we appreciate the FAA’s collaboration to ensure the aircraft is the best it can be.”

And the KC-46 received it's 1st non American order.

Boeing Receives Contract for Japan KC-46 Tanker
Quote:
Japan Air Self-Defense Force becomes first international KC-46 customer

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 22, 2017 – Through the Foreign Military Sale process, the U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing [NYSE: BA] a $279 million contract for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF’s) first KC-46 tanker and logistics support, marking the aircraft’s first international sale.

Japan chose Boeing’s KC-46 tanker over competitors following its KC-X aerial refueling competition. The KC-46 adds to the JASDF’s current fleet of four KC-767J tankers.

Amazon Prime Air started this year with 4 767 freighters. Now they have 21 in their fleet, which is operated by Atlas Air and ATSG. At the end of 2018 they are planning to operate 40 767s.

Will Amazon eventually operate their own AOC for their freighters?

Nope, they call it the KC-46. B767-200 structure, 787 cockpit and flight avionics. Only instead of Amazon Prime fulfillments, it carries jet fuel

Really, Boeing should just abandon the idea of building new pax 767-machines and instead officially introduce the 797.
