The project documentation is being elaborated in these days.

Thanks for the answers. It was interesting if they plan to use the metro infrastructure for this tram extension. Actually Bratislava is way too small for a metro system, and I think that LRT can be a good solution for the city. In that matter, are there any other planned extensions of the tram network in the near future (lets say until 2022, when the current EU financing period expires)?

The general transport masterplan was completed two months ago and advanced to consultation process within SEA. The main purpose of this masterplan is to analyze the city and region, model the future prognoses and propose some basic measures following the modelled trasport trips. Nevertheless, the city made a huge mistake in terms of referrence. Instead to let the masterplan propose the new tracks, city officials did this in advance and the whole analysis is only a feasibility study of already proposed measures without knowing if there are other tracks neccessary. The choice of the tracks is nebelous withou preceeding analyses - it is de facto the dream of some individuals.

However some tracks are reasonable while some are craziest than e.g. ideas of making Sun habitable :-D a lot of negative objections have been made and the city is currently working on review. By the 2020 lot of projects concerns extending of troleybus tracks

Is this going to be a tram-only bridge?

Yes, fortunately, except pedestrians, cyclists and rescue forces.

Yes, trams, cyclists and pedestrians only. In case of need also emergency units will be able to use the bridge.

De iure. De facto, some minor additional construction works are still ongoing.

Please forgive me if this has recently been answered, but why does the new tram extension include double gauge? Is it to future-proof the system for an eventual transition to standard gauge, or possibly for an upgrade sometime in the future to more substantial LRT? Is it for freight during non-operational hours?

AFAIK test with trams were only yesterday and today, there are not information about another tests yet. However, bridge should be opened for public transportation in Spring, problably in May.

There was an original plan to integrate the city tramway network into the regional rail system and use tram-trains. This was recently abandoned as well as eventual transition to th standard gauge due to large cost and low effectivity. Second stage of Petržalka tram will use Bratislava tram gauge (1000 mm), thus the standard rail gauge will be only on this short stretch of the track.

The profitability of change to standard gauge was strongly criticized by European Commission.

Obviously the transition to standard gauge would bring it in line with some other tramway networks in that area, including Prague, as well as offering low floor trams with wider aisles.

Nice video and great extension which was seriously overdue.

Does anyone know the status of those various plans for extension / modification of the heavy rail network in Bratislava? Have all these plans been shelved or totally torn to pieces? Any chance of the Pressburger Bahn heading to Pressburg again? What about a possible extension of the service to Petrzalka stanica to the airport (with a possible transfer stop at the tram line)?
