Nagpur metro approved
17 Feb 2014

INDIA: The government has given final approval to the Nagpur metro, which will see two lines totalling 38 km opening by 2020. The first route is to connect Automotive Chowk with Mihan, where an international airport is being built. The second would run between Prajapati Nagar and Lokmanya Nagar.

The Rs86·8bn project would be developed as a 50:50 public-private partnership. The central and Maharashtra state governments would each provide 20% of the funding, and Nagpur Municipal Corporation would provide 5%. The remaining 5% public contribution would come from lead developer Nagpur Improvement Trust. This organisation will be replaced by Nagpur Metro Railway Corp, a special purpose vehicle, when it is established. Delhi Metro Rail Corp carried out the feasibility study.

looking towards all the conditions and problems Nagpur faces everytime I think none of government will spend 9000 Cr rs. on such a project which belongs to Nagpur. Our government always give secondary treatment to Nagpur projects because it is too much away from other big cities. Problem is with all small projects and it is a very big project compared to another projects currently running. A single project like Ram Jhoola itself takes more than 5 years to complete with very less cost compared to Metro Rail total cost.

Have they started constructing the metro or is this one of the many "proposed" metros in India?

I've been thinking about the posts stating that the Nagpur Metro will not be realized before 2050, and (even though this may sound crazy) I would think by that time, Nagpur can grow to become the fifth major city of India, after Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore. One reason being the fact that Nagpur lies at the dead centre of the Indian peninsula.

Old news but nevertheless interesting news. Would be interesting to see how they execute this.

Nagpur Metro’s Interchange to be part of 25 Storey Building

Quote:
As per various reports (like this & this), Nagpur’s Sitabuldi station, which will function as an interchange between the north-south and east-west metro lines, will be part of a 25 storey building. This interchange station is proposed to come up at Munje Square and a huge passenger load is expected.

The building is proposed to be the tallest in the city and will contain a viewers’ gallery on the terrace. The building itself will also contain shops, offices, restaurants and perhaps a hotel as well. With this mixed-use transit oriented development plan in place, the Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) hopes that it will become an excellent source of revenue. They plan to hold a global competition for architects to design this landmark building.

The station at Munje Square is not the only one that NMRCL plans to make a landmark building. At Ambazari, the station will have a 1 km walkway (with a glass wall) at a height of 15 meters that will provide a view of the lake and its surroundings. Similarly, commercial development will also take place here.
