Canary wharf was designed by the same guy who designed an area of New Yorks financial centre where the twin towers used to be.... The two look very similar next to each other.. Frankfurt doesn't.

Yes, they do! I've noticed that, but I was never sure why until now.

For example.

New York or Canary Wharf? They even have the same pyramid roofed scraper as the centre point of the cluster.

To be honest we can't compare any European city to NY or even smaller American, Canadian or even Ozzie cities, they have great Art Deco skyscrapers, quantity and therefore density is much higher in U.S. If there is any city in Europe that come close to American style city it's obviously Frankfurt.

Disagree. Frankfurt looks nothing like a North American skyline.

Canary Wharf is the nearest thing you will get to a North American skyline in Europe... Because it IS a North American skyline, designed by a North American company, by the same company and guy that designed the World Financial Centre in New York. This was no accident. Making a slice of New York in London was part of the master plan brief for Canary Wharf so that the many Americans working there would feel more at home.

Well, IMO Frankfurt is closest to an American city, either from distance or from the street level. London doesn't look like an American city, not that it's some disadvantage, just sayin'.
Even Hague looks more American .

It's true that in the picture posted by LondonFox Canary Wharf looks a bit like Manhattan, whereas on other angles it looks really different.
I think La Defense in Paris looks also like an american skyline, but not like NYC, i would say more Atlanta or Houston style.

In London, only Canary Wharf looks American. This is due to its grid layout, density and uniform building shapes. I personally find this contributes to a far more aesthetically pleasing than the City of London cluster.

I don't get people here. First you guys are arguing which one has the best skyline by comparing metro sizes and density, now you argue which skyline looks more American. Question: Is this even a good thing? How about a European city manages to create it's very own, unique style.
@ London Fox, So Canary Wharf was designed by an American and resembles New York very closely...that means on the other hand, London will forever be a second rate New York copy. New York will always have the more impressive skyline.

It is good to look to the best skylines in the world, and try to understand how they naturally developed. Unless you have unlimited money like cities in the middle east, city skylines tend to develop because of market forces. These being population density and demand. Comparing European cities in this way is useful to see how they will develop based on current density and demands.

In a lot of people's opinion, American Cities tend to have the most Aesthetically pleasing skylines, and these have grown up because of their density and demand for space. Aspiring for our cities to have an aesthetically pleasing skyline like say New York, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta, Seattle ect. is surely a good thing. I'm not saying we should wholesale copy these cities, but look to see what makes them aesthetically pleasing and try to emulate this in our own way.

You might want to mind your language there. That's how arguments get started.

Canary Wharf was not a copy of New York. It was a planned business district which is a product of its time. It was not a copy of the World Financial Center in NY, but it was built along the same lines. The core of the estate is now there. It will grow naturally outwards. Canary Wharf will never be New York, and no one is trying to make it so. It is also disingenuous to conflate Canary Wharf with all there is skyline wise in London.

Exactly. People round here seem to think Canary Wharf and City of London are the same thing.

I'm not talking about City of London, and I'm not talking about the entire skyline of New York...

I AM talking about two localised financial districts inside two cities.. Canary Wharf and The World Financial Centre ... Both master plans designed and built by the same Canadian company and architects. Designed to look almost exactly the same.

Because of that, Canary Wharf is by nature the only North American looking skyscraper district in Europe.

That's it. I didn't say anything was better than anything else. I'm just stating a fact.

If you stand on the Tower Bridge and look towards Canary Wharf, it is an impressive sight which resembles a small NY.
