A new £1.9 million bus and rail interchange at Cradley Heath is beginning to take shape as steelwork to form the skeleton of the building is craned into place.

The facility, which will feature cutting edge passenger information and improved waiting facilities, is being paid for through the Better Bus Area Fund.

This is a £10 million pot to improve public transport in Brierley Hill, Merry Hill and Cradley Heath

I'll also put a few other photos in the general metro thread from Wolverhampton. Metrogogo does a fantastic job with his daily updates so this will obviously duplicate that but I'm only here occasionally so I like to share what I get when I am!

I also noticed some cables strung between the buildings on Corporation Street - are these just for lighting or are they tram related?

I finally got up to Birmingham today to have a look at the Metro, and decided to follow the works all the way from Stephenson St up to Great Charles St. Before posting the photos, I'd just like to say: I don't get to Birmingham nearly as much as I'd like at the moment - thanks so much to the guys who keep uploading pictures - it helps me stay connected with a city that I really love a lot. Anyway, follow me on my long overdue journey from New St to Snow Hill!

This is the current state of play on the Stephenson St curve:

And this is the ramp leading up to Corporation St, which has been dug out ready for work:

This was the only section of the works which had netting up all around it, but this is what I could get of the Corporation St platform. I was surprised by how close it was to the Stephenson St stop - I breezed up here by foot in less than a minute.

I tried to take some pictures of the works around Colmore Row (which is looking so impressive these days) but was scared of being killed to death by traffic, because the temporary fences and bollards are pushing pedestrians into the road to be minced by angry taxis. Much of the line on Corporation St and Colmore Row is finished, in any case. The next picture I got was of the curve by Snow Hill, which is progressing nicely.

Further up, the work has yet to progress as far. I'm hoping that the stop being pushed out over the bridge will cure this 'end of the city' vibe that the current view north of Snow Hill station gives when you look out over the wasteland here. It's similar to the feeling you get on the train heading east out of New Street on the way to the airport, masses of empty land around Curzon St.

Now here's the interesting thing that I wanted to ask - I scooted across GCS and cut back through the tunnel along Lionel St. In the process I saw the scaffold which the construction workers have been using to access the Snow Hill bridge:

My question is - is this where the stairs down from the new Metro stop are planned for? Or is it directly onto GCS, here (this seems far too busy with cars from what I can see):

The other thing I hadn't appreciated was how moving the station will push the Snow Hill stop much closer to St Paul's. Has anything been said about keeping/removing St Paul's stop? It seems a shame to ruin the access to such a lovely part of town.

Anyway, I've been wanting to do a photo upload for a long time, and I'm glad I finally got round to it today. It really shows you how the Metro will cut a quick path through the city centre - the entire walk from Stephenson St up to behind Two Snow Hill and back down to New St took only 15 mins or so but passed through a lot of high density office and commercial space. I hadn't appreciated how large and tall the whole Colmore district is! I also hunted down the Livery St entrance to Snow Hill - to leave that lovely wall hanging there with that awful multistorey car park behind it is a disgrace. I hope the eventual station redevelopment acknowledges the old wall and ornate entrances and incorporates them back into a new building.

Midlands Metro Expansion

About the lecture
Date of event: 12 FEBRUARY 2015

Speaker(s): Richard Briggs Associate, Mott MacDonald, Paul Griffiths Metro and Sprint Programme Director

A Transport and Works Act for a 3.2km extension from Snow Hill to Five Ways (west of Birmingham City Centre) was granted in 2005 and a material operation took place in 2010 to secure the Order.

The material operation included the replacement of an existing bridge over the A38 and adjacent to the existing Midland Metro track.

This scheme, commonly known as the Birmingham City Centre Extension is being constructed in stages, with the first stage from Snow Hill to Birmingham New Street currently being constructed through the city centre.

Funding is also secured to deliver further extensions within Wolverhampton and Birmingham including Centenary Square, Five Ways and Eastside via the proposed HS2 terminal and Digbeth Coach Station.

A fleet of new tram vehicles have also recently been introduced on to the existing network which has required a major expansion of the depot at Wednesbury and amendments to the existing infrastructure.

This presentation will provide a general update on the Midland Metro Enhancements and the extensions within Birmingham including some examples of the challenges that the Project Team have had to consider and overcome.

Public consultation for proposed Park and Ride at Midland Metro stop
16.02.2015

The proposed Park and Ride at Bradley Lane would include four marked football pitches on the remaining open space

The public is being asked to give its views on plans to create a 196 space car park for the Midland Metro in Walsall.

Centro, the region's public transport co-ordinator, wants to build it as part of its popular Park and Ride scheme, which provides free parking for thousands of motorists to use public transport.

The proposed site is on public open space and as part of the plan Centro will provide three full-sized football pitches and a junior pitch alongside the car park

Unusual sections of grooved rail where the groove has been cut-away, and the groove thats left as been flared out. I imagine the ends of these rails will but up and join the ballasted track rails further along on the Livery St Viaduct.

These rails have the wording "Piazza" written on the ends. I can only think that they are destined to be installed along side the Colonnade.
