Looks a lot like a film set. Nice enough, I'd live there.

A sad thing is going on in my hometown, Skopje - a brutalist building is being put under "face lifting" process, so to speak. The current government, which is consist of ultra-nationalists and idiots, and hates all the traces of socialism in Macedonia, changes the facades of many buildings, and among them is this one.

I cannot even describe the kitsch in all of this:

source

And this is how they do it:

The good thing is that one shiny day it could be easily disassembled and the building could be brought back to it's original look.

This is the original look:

P.S. I was never ashamed of my country like in the past few years with this government and the process of "baroquesation" they do in Skopje. It's just awful.

Any 'before' photos?

In Ceausescu's time they also covered up a brutalist icon (National Theatre) in Bucharest with a kitsch "classical" facade. Thankfully it was torn down and restored to the original look, but it took 30-something years.

The last photo in my post is the building before receiving new "facade".

Meanwhile, somewhere in Skopje:

The problem with Skopje is that the buildings before were even more hidious.

So even the "baroquesation" might look bad, it still looks better then the original building.

For example the gouvernment building, it might be all plastic and kitch but i think most poeple would prefer the remake.
The original are just tree plain old boring boxes.

This was posted earlier in the thread by user Joshsam, but I think it's worth another look for those who did not see it:

"We always wanted to build a house, from the ground up, our own home crafted from the sweat of our brows. Actually, we decided to mix things up a little, and build it from the roof, down. But we ran out of money part way through...

yes, on the negative side, we live in a roof. But look at the positives: burglars will not break into a house which they believe is largely buried under several tons of earth. "

If anyone has a better explanation please share it.

I can be positive that is likely a house, wich does not only consist of the roof part but also of an extended flat roof part behind the roof in front. It's so darn ugly

This one is still not finished. It was built in Guatemala City, in a hill. The top half looks nice, but the lower half...

Well that really changes things. An example from Moscow, possibly our ugliest business center.
