Tbh I don't hate the second image, I like the dirty, warn-out look of the building and IF this is a seafood joint, a big black scary octopus beats a restaurant sign anyday.

The Main Place Tower is located at 350 Main Street, in Buffalo, NY. The skyscraper is the fourth tallest building in the city, and home to a large number of technology and communication firms. The tower is connected to the Main Place Mall, downtown's only shopping mall, with a gross leasable area of 250,000 square feet (23,000 m2).[1] In recent years, it has lost a great deal of its retail shops to suburban shopping centers.[2] The tower, built in 1969, rises 350 feet (107 meters).
I hope this is torn down and the intersection reconstructed in my lifetime.

Those drab brown office towers of the 60s/70s seem to be in every city around the world and are always so depressing

Disgusting. The worst thing is that people in SSC will defend it.

^ there isn't necessarily much *wrong* with it *in itself* (not that I find it an architectural achievement other), the problem is rather that it represents an obvious downgrade from what there was before... And yes, the repetition of stock versions of this architectural type does grate at a point... Luckily, this kind of architecture can be easily improved with complete refurbishments, which happens a lot nowadays.

Yeah because the tower itself is not bad. Not great either to be fair. Sucks about the historical loss but there has always been historical loss. At least now people have mostly learned to preserve architecture.

There's a difference what's good and bad and what you like or not.

I wonder what was going through their minds.

Hopefully those mirrored panels are easily removable so that when their mistake is corrected 20 years from now it won't be a hassle.

Last week I visited twice that park with that building and visited the exhibition inside too. It is amazing. One of the best experiences I've ever had with architecture. It only clicks when being there, though, because the whole point is the reflective feature of the mirrors. Basically, the building comes to life, or better said, it goes the other way by progressively turning into its environment with an added subtle glow that is just magic (the glow comes from both the light and the curving of the "mirrors", which generates a certain "flow" of the visual forms as you move around). It's like Radiohead's How To Disappear Completely made into architecture.

I took a lot of pics and they capture something more than any pictures I have seen, so hopefully in the next few days I get the time to uploads them to my flickr.

How can they bring back the old or missing historical texture? sad.

^ they can't - the original castle was completely destroyed in WWII. What you see in the "before" pics is the cheap pastiche from the 50s.
