Thanks everybody! What a sweet welcome you get in here!

Yeah...well, unfortunately I don't know the one language everyone seems to think I master (because of my asian looks) hehe. Besides, they're all pretty alike; Spanish and French basically have the same grammars and also similar words - likewise with Latin (the little I had to learn). So it sounds better than it is hehe

Someone else who's interested in languages. I learned many but I only really speak English (not a perfect one) and French. I learned, Latin, Old Greek, Spanish and Italian.

But better not ask me anything in.

Cool. I love Italian but unfortunately I don't speak it - yet I bet you could easily learn to speak Spanish as well as you speak French

Oooh, it's great the interest in learning Spanish is growing around the world. What I like bout Spanish is that when you can speak it, you can also understand most of Portuguese, Italian and French. Oh, btw, welcome to the forum Maria.

Especially considering I'm just a few minutes away from Spain. I can't speak it, I can only say a few words.

No hablo Español. Como estas? Habla Inglés?

And that's about it.

Yet I would disagree saying French and Spanish can learn each others language that easily. The Spanish and French spelling are completly different and if the grammar is more or less the same, the vocabulary is very different.

Well, if you learn the elementaire levels at the Alliance Francaise, with Spanish background you can understand most of the written words. Now, speaking and listening comprehension is a different story...

Yeah, you're right efesese. I think what I mean is that when I learned Spanish I already knew French, so having knowin French grammars and vocabulary made it easier to learn Spanish because I was over that hurdle and all I had to concentrate about was getting the pronunciation right and memorizing a new vocabulary (and of course do the verb thing - endings and so). So now with my French and Spanish basics I can almost understand Italian, and it would also be easier for me to learn because of that. *Phew*, I have a problem expressing myself clearly hehe - even I'm confused.

Btw Exarchus, so you're in France now! Must be awesome I've never been there myself but hopefully I will some day... alas!

BTW, I ordered books also to learn our old language (pre-French), the Gascon. Though without practicing it, it'll be hard (it nearly a dead language).

Don't get confused, u're making sense. For me French is so hard to pronounce compared to Spanish (which is "what you see is is how it sounds"). When I've time I'm gonna take 3 months off and go to Paris or maybe Toulouse to learn more French. And when I get older I'm gonna spend a whole year learning Japanese in Tokyo.

To leanr French I would recommand Tours or Angers more than Paris, less accents, it's the academic French.

Actually I feel exactly the oposite way I think Spanish is soo difficult to pronounce because of all the R's - I make it sound horrible. Somehow I find French easier - maybe because some of the sounds (like the sound of the R's) are more like Danish - though, the similarity i small 'cause Danish isn't really a "pretty" language. I might be going to Spain (Málaga) this summer, then I hope to get that darn pronunciation right once and for all.

Going to Tokyo sounds amazing. Wow, Japanese... I hope you go

Well, one thing you should think about when learning French, is about 25% (yeah, that much) of the English vocabulary come from the French (old French). Spanish has nearly nothing in common with English so it changes of course the way you learn the two languages.
