Faros de España - Lighthouses of Spain

Spain and its islands, is a land of coasts and mostly rugged coastlines and in many cases dangerous. Therefore, the need of lighthouses for coastal navigation is paramount.

Thus, and since ancient times, these buildings have existed on the Spanish coast, and thus, in Spain there is the world's oldest still functioning lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, and others of more recent construction, are based on earlier buildings with hundreds, and in some cases, millennia of years.

Torre de Hércules, A Coruña, Galicia Community - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Tower of Hercules (Galician and Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 mi) from the center of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, the tower itself was known as the "Farum Brigantium". The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The structure is 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. The structure, almost 1900 years old and rehabilitated in 1791, is the oldest Roman lighthouse in use today.
The Tower of Hercules is a National Monument of Spain, and since June 27, 2009, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wikipedia

Faro del Cantíl, Isla Cristina, Huelva Province, Andalusia Community

Is opposite the Playa del Cantil, in Punta de Isla Cristina, close to the marina. Its peculiarity is that it is an old lighthouse, now converted into residential building. For location, since it excellent views of the mouth of the estuary, marshes and sunsets are obtained.

Faro del Cabo Mayor, Santander, Cantabria Community

Located on the promontory of Cabo Mayor, north of the city of Santander, was ordered to build a rotating beacon by Royal Order of February 17, 1833. In this place already existed a watchtower from which signals are made to ships, both day (with flags) and night (with fireworks). The current lighthouse was opened six years later, on August 15, 1839.
The set consists of a circular tower clad in stone. Downstairs there is a second body of square plant. Its focal height is 91 meters above sea level and 30 meters above the ground.

Faro de la Punta del Caballo, Santoña, Cantabria Community

Currently abandoned lighthouse of Punta del Caballo is a mythical place for the difficulties of access. By sea and after reaching the rock wall climb the 100 steps to the lighthouse or overland through the mountain Buciero and down the 890 steps to the lighthouse.

The lighthouse became operational in 1863, and his service got two keepers, which alternated periodically.

The small complex was divided in two, a building for housing and other the lighthouse.

Interesting and unusual topic. thanks

I live near the coast of Massachusetts, with many lighthouses. It is nice to see the beautiful lighthouses across the Atlantic in Spain.

Faro de Cabo Trafalgar, Barbate, Cádiz Province, Andalusia Community

Although it has name of cape, is a sandy isthmus which are ruins that are traces left by man for hundreds of years. Maybe old lighthouses that lit the immense night this part of the world.

Built in 1860, just 55 years after one of the most famous and bloody naval battles in history.

The lighthouse is a monumental construction of approximately 34 meters high and white conical tower, erected close to the beacon tower of the same name. It is located in the municipality of Barbate, Cadiz province.

Thanks,

Faro de Mouro, Santander, Cantabria Community

Mouro Lighthouse is located in Mouro Island at the entrance to the Bay of Santander, in Cantabria.

This lighthouse became operational for the first time on February 15, 1860. Its design is similar to other rock lighthouses that illuminate the English coast, with a white conical tower located in the center of the house (on one level) where the lighthouse keepers lived. They did so until 1921, giving the fact that in many cases remained incommunicado for several days temporary to reside on an island. The focal height of the lighthouse is 38.7 meters above sea level, the tower being 18.39 meters in height above the ground.

At the galernas (sea storms in the area), the lighthouse can be beaten by waves covering the whole of the tower, its about 39 meters above sea level.

Higuer Faroa, Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa/Guipúzcoa Province, Basque Country Community

This neoclassical lighthouse was built in the nineteenth century, specifically in 1878, although there was another ancient lighthouse destroyed in the same place in 1874 in the Carlist Wars. This is the last or first lighthouse of Iberian peninsula according look.

It is located 65 meters high, with a stone tower of 21 meters. Its position marks the entrance to the Bidasoa river and warning of the presence of dangerous rocks of Cape Higer and Amuitz Island.
