Addis Ababa train to start public transport amidst traffic safety concerns
Thursday, 02 April 2015 00:00

As Addis Ababa city’s new 32 kilometers electric train transport is set to solve the transportation problem of the city traffic safety remains a concern. The city’s new train is expected to transport 15,000 passengers in an hour when it goes operational in the coming few months

“The existing transport system (vehicles) of the city will feed passengers to the 20 new train stations and I hope will solve the current transportation shortage of the city,” said Behailu Sintayehu, Project manager of the Addis Ababa City Light Railway.

“We are currently testing tracks and signals and the train service will start within a month and half. The electric authority is also working to allocate the 750 volts electric power we require for the railway system. So that we will have fully dedicated and continuous electric supply and avoid transport service interruption,” he told reporters on Sunday

i just thought more people would get attracted to the thread by a title referring explicitly to the light rail... Maybe Addis Ababa | Public Transport | Light Rail and City Bus ?

They will synchronize start of revenue service with the first two turbines of Gibe III coming online this month. Power consumption did rise too fast so they lacked 160 MW needed for the light rail. Deadline is now October

No, but they are discussing to expand those two lines in all four directions and link LRT with National Railway currently under construction.

Ethiopia made a tremendous transformation from one of the least developed nation in Africa to the leader of the pack with two digit growth rates since 2005 or so, while ignoring almost every prescription from the Washington Consensus. If this non-commodity growth is sustained Ethiopia might become a new model for development.

Does this have to be political?
