Apparently 10 per hour per direction. The part between Stadium and Lideta (4 stops) which is used by both lines will therefore have 20 per hour per direction.

The proper comparison would be CTA Yellow Line, which like Addis Ababa runs two-car trains.

Hello Woonsocket54, I checked your profile and you seem to have a general interest and expertise in public transport in general and specifically in urban rail systems.

It would be nice of you if you could elaborate what specific features you dislike about Addis Light Rail, how it could be improved and/or should have been designed in the first place (keeping in mind those limited financial resources available).

Not bad for a starter line , are there any plans to increase it down the road?

There is an update on this one:

The company has completed its design for the railway network, which is expected to connect the city in every direction including Bole Airport, Lebu, Burayou, and condominium housing areas like Jomo.
More work on railways for CREC

My guess would be that they first start to use coupled train-sets.

Addis Ababa, November 9, 2015 (FBC) –The second route of the Addis Ababa light rail system, which stretches from Hayat Square-Megenagna -Torhailoch, has begun operation this morning.

It will give service for 16 hours in a day, Dereje Tefera, Communication Affairs Head of the Ethiopian Railways Corporation, told journalists here today. The tariffs are similar to that of the first route, which extends from Kaliti to Menelik Square, he said. Accordingly, the tariff for 4-km distance is 2 birr, while 8.8-km distance costs 4 birr. The cost for the full journey is 6 birr. Up to 21 trams will be assigned for the line based on the number of commuters, he said.

The first route, which was opened on September 20, 2015, is currently transporting tens of thousands of passengers per day. It is also generating up to 200,000 birr revenue on average. The Addis Ababa light rail transit has a total length of 32 km, 32 stations and 22 elevators. The construction of the double track electrified light rail transit project was launched in December 2011 and was completed in January 2015. It began trial operation in February 2, 2015 in the presence of senior government officials, including Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit was built at a cost of 475 million US dollars, of which 85 percent was obtained from Exim Bank of China.
