Here's a better pic of the Manchester trams. Some of those are outdated now and have been spruced up a lot.

The Manchester system has an interesting mix of features:

1. A tunnel section as fast as a metro.

2. An on-street section as slow as a bus.

Actually none of the Manchetser Metrolink system operates as an underground metro.

The picture seen here is the terminus at Piccadily, and is located under Manchester Piccadily mainline railway station. So it is more like a station within a building - and not an underground station.

btw, before Metrolink was built the original plans were for an underground railway linking two mainline staions (Piccadily and Victoria) which are on different sides of the vity centre.

But the British government refused to provide the money, saying that Manchester was not important enough to justify the investment.

Of course this was a very big insult for the people of Manchester, but to save face they decided to have a street based system instead.

Metrolink has been very succesful - but because of shortage of money there are not enough tramcars and in the rush hours some services are so overcrowded that passengers are left behind on the platforms.

I think that part of the "problem" is that the government earns so much money from taxation on motorists that it does not want too many people using public transport - people who use public transport do not contribute towards these taxes.

Actually, the Manchester Metro trams do go underground at points, they also go overground in the air, they go in the street, and they go on dedicated rail track also.

So, it really is a light rail system. The reason it goes on rail tracks is that it was cheaper to build the system as old disused branch lines could easily be upgraded much cheaper than building a new system from scratch. You can see this in the bridge and in-cab photos where it is running on railways lines. On the in-cab photo it bombs along that stretch, even though it might not be underground. Actually it's about 30 foot in the air at that point.

Currently it really only goes into the street along with normal traffic in the city centre and between four stops along Langworthy and Eccles New Road. Even then however, the stops are removed well off to the side of the road, and traffic is stopped well before a tram pulls out of a street station to give it a clear run without any cars or buses in front of it.

Manchester cannot have a tube/metro system, as it is a city built on clay, apparently.

The reason it has its doors pirched way in the air is because it uses conventional rail tracks, thus normal boarding platforms, unlike must continental trams where the doors are almost right down at road surface level.
