Freiburg tram network extends north
17 Mar 2014

GERMANY: A northern extension of Freiburg’s metre-gauge tram route 5 from Reutebachgasse to Zähringen opened on March 15, six weeks ahead of schedule.

‘For the first time in the city’s history of over 100 years, light rail goes beyond the city limits — a sign of how highly integrated light rail is in the transport system, and these are the building blocks of good regional co-operation’, said Freiburg Mayor Dieter Salomon.

The extension runs along a mostly segregated and grassed alignment, with a 335-space park-and-ride site and a covered bike-and-ride facility at the new terminus.

Groundbreaking for the 1·8 km extension with two intermediate stops took place on 26 July 2011. It is part of ZRF’s ‘northern light rail’ and ‘Breisgau-S-Bahn integrated regional transport’ projects.

For cities with specific threads if we can keep information in those threads it would be better. Really, this thread should be used for systems that are too small and/or will not be updated enough as standalone threads. You can find most German big cities in the thread finder on the main page of Subways & Urban Transit.

I ask this because otherwise this thread will either duplicate or supersede the individual city threads and we don't really want that.

DB orders S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland EMUs
20 Mar 2014

GERMANY: Deutsche Bahn placed a €146m contract for 29 Bombardier Talent 2 electric multiple-units on March 20, the 13th firm order under a €1bn framework agreed in 2007.

The 19 three-car and 10 five-car EMUs are to be manufactured at Bombardier's Hennigsdorf site. They are due to enter service from autumn 2016 on S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland services from Halle and Gaschwitz, running through the Leipzig City-Tunnel to Dessau and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

Bombardier said the air-conditioned EMUs would offer 'seats with generous spacing and roomy multi-purpose compartments for bicycle transport', as well as a group seating area for up to 14 passengers. They will have in-car CCTV, real-time passenger information displays and an accessible toilet.

Cantus retains Nordost-Hessen-Netz contract
25 Mar 2014

GERMANY: Following a Europe-wide tender, on March 24 Nordhessen transport authority NVV selected incumbent Cantus for a 15-year contract to operate Nordost-Hessen-Netz regional services between December 2016 and December 2031.

The services linking Kassel, Göttingen and Fulda and between Bebra and Eisenach have been operated by the Cantus joint venture of BeNEX and Hessischer Landesbahn since 2006. The new contract covers the operation of around 3·9 million train-km/year, using a fleet of 21 Stadler Flirt electric multiple-units.

'This was a crucial contract', said Cantus Managing Director Andreas Ortz. 'Employees have been eagerly awaiting this decision for the last few weeks. We are proud that our bid has succeeded, and we can continue on our successful course.'

S-Bahn Rhein-Main EMU deliveries begin
17 Apr 2014

GERMANY: The first of 91 ET430 electric multiple-units ordered in November 2011 for use on S-Bahn Rhein-Main services was displayed to the public at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof on April 11.

DB Regio Hessen is initially putting the units into service on route S1 and airport services, before deployment across routes S1, S7, S8 and S9 to replace ageing ET420 EMUs. Once all the ET430s have been delivered they will increase the DB Regio Hessen fleet by 30 units to a total of 191 trainsets.

Representing an investment of €500m, the four-car EMUs were ordered from Bombardier with Alstom as subcontractor. They have a maximum speed of 140 km/h, with 176 seats and space for 310 standing passengers. They are fitted with air-conditioning, passenger information systems and CCTV which stores images for 120 h. The units for Frankfurt are not equipped with sliding steps which were fitted to similar units previously supplied to Stuttgart; these proved problematic and are currently deactivated

Bremen plans new and upgraded LRV fleet
Monday, April 14, 2014

BREMEN Tramways (BSAG) has announced plans to acquire a fleet of up to 77 LRVs and refurbish up to 62 existing GT8N low-floor trams as part of its demand-driven tram use (Nose) project.

BSAG will decide exactly how many vehicles it intends to purchase and refurbish when it issues a call for tender in mid-2014. It is currently planning to acquiring a minimum of 15 LRVs, with options to purchase a total of 38, 57 or 77 vehicles. A minimum of 20 GT8N LRVs will be refurbished, but this could be increased to 39 or 62 vehicles.

All of the vehicles will need to be equipped with a wheelchair lift at the leading passenger door. The new LRVs must have a 100% low floor, be 2.65m wide, and up to 37m long, with a maximum height of 3.65m. They should have around 100 seats and 135 standing places, plus five multiple-use areas. The maximum axleload should be 116kN. The LRVs will operate on lines electrified at 600V dc, which will later be converted to 750V dc.
