Freiburg breaks ground on tram extension
15 Jan 2015

GERMANY: A groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 15 for the Rotteckring tram extension in Freiburg.

The 1·9 km extension is to branch off the existing Route 2 at Siegesdenkmal and run south to Kronenstraße, with five stops. The first phase, to Stadttheater, is due to open in 2017, with the whole extension completed the following year.

The project is receiving €23·5m in federal funding and €9·8m from the Land of Baden-Württemberg. Around €9m is being spent on the demolition and reconstruction of the Kronenbrücke bridge over the River Dreisam, which is due to begin next month.

The tram route will be laid in the road median strip and forms part of a larger project to relandscape the area around Rotteckring

Bochum-Gelsenkirchen to order 42 new LRVs
Tuesday, March 17, 2015

GERMANY's Bochum-Gelsenkirchen Tramways (Bogestra) will launch a tender before the end of this month for 42 new metre-gauge LRVs after the company's supervisory board approved a €200m plan to replace the troubled fleet of NFD6D trams and modernise the vehicles used on Stadtbahn Line U35

The fleet of 42 NFD6Ds, which were built by Düwag and Siemens in 1992-94, has been restricted to 30km/h since January 28 following the discovery of damage to wheelsets. A revised timetable has been introduced on parts of the network and a programme of remedial works has begun with the aim of raising the maximum operating speed to 50km/h, but it is likely to be several years before the whole fleet can be treated. The first modified vehicle is due to return to service next month

Augsburg tram projects move forward
Thursday, July 02, 2015

THE German city of Augsburg is planning to construct a new tram line and a tram/rail interchange beneath the main station as part of its wider Project Augsburg City urban regeneration project

The basic structure of the eastern entrance ramp to the future underground station at Augsburg Main Station was completed earlier this year, although track and electrification have not yet been installed. The 120m-long ramp takes the track down to a depth of 14m and was constructed using cut-and-cover techniques.

Work is now underway to build the 400m double-track underground section, which is at 90o to the heavy rail lines above. The tram platforms will be located beneath a new underground ticket hall, which is being constructed as part of the modernisation of the station, and this will create a three-level transport interchange
