Bremen approves tram funding
11 Nov 2015

GERMANY: The Bremen Senate announced on November 10 that it had approved funding for capital expenditure on the city’s tram network.

The approved funds include €210m for the purchase of 67 new trams, for which a tender is to be called next year. Deliveries of prototypes are due to take place in 2018, with series deliveries to begin the following year. The Senate notes that the 77 GT8N trams dating from 1993-96 have exceeded their expected yearly mileage and are therefore prematurely coming to the end of their service life

It´s common sense meanwhile in Germany, that trams "exceeding their expected yearly mileage" are planned to be substituted by new ones.

Though normally a tram built in 1995 should at least run until 2025. This is mainly caused by a very effective strategy for maintainance, keeping trams running much more kilometers per year than ever before. So the legal expected maximum of running (axles, bogies, etc.) is reached more early. Probably the trams are still in good condition, but keeping them longer in service means shorter intervals of inspection. For some countries this probably looks like a luxury-problem, so I wonder if those trams get exported to other cities after they have been put out of service.

Berlin is buying new Subway trains and Trams for 3,1 billion €. Delivery starts in 2020

The article also says that right now, 1/3 of the rolling stock right now is far beyond their economic lifespan and literarally scrap

What's funny is that the abbreviation for the Freiburg transit operator is VAG. What were they thinking?

Freiburger Verkehrs AG. Freiburg Transport Company. AG stands for Aktiengesellschaft, which is German word for a corporation, owned by its shareholders

Chemnitz tram-trains enter service
Wednesday, April 06, 2016

THE first of eight Vossloh electro-diesel Citylink tram-trains ordered by Mid-Saxony transport authority VMS entered service in the Chemnitz area on April 4. Initially the vehicles are only operating on DB Network infrastructure as BoStrab certification for use on the CVAG-owned Chemnitz city tram network has not yet been completed

This means that until the end of April, operator Chemnitz City Bahn will use the vehicles exclusively on Chemnitz - Mittweida services

New trams for Chemnitz

Quote:

GERMANY: The 6 km Eschweiler-St Jöris – Stolberg line east of Aachen was ceremonially reopened on June 10, followed on June 12 by a day of free travel to highlight the start of the new passenger service.

The line had closed to passenger services in 1984 and reactivation required two years of construction work. Reopening enables Euregiobahn services from Stolberg Hbf to run in a loop via Alsdorf, Herzogenrath and Aachen back to Stolberg Hbf, continuing towards Langerwehe or Stolberg Altstadt

GERMANY: Chemnitzer Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft signed a €35m contract with Škoda Transportation on June 14 for the supply of 14 low-floor trams. This marks Škoda’s first tram order for Germany.

Škoda is to supply the stainless steel bodied bidirectional ForCity Classic trams between mid-2018 and mid-2019. Each five-section tram with three driven bogies will be 33 m long and 2 650 mm wide, with capacity for 192 passengers including 64 seats and four wheelchair spaces. Air-conditioning and wi-fi are to be installed. The trams have an expected service life of 32 years, and CVAG foresees that each one will cover around 2 million km during this time.

A tender was called in 2015 for the supply of trams to replace CVAG’s 10 high-floor Tatra T3D-M models supplied in 1988 and modernised in the early 1990s. These make up around one-third of the fleet of 34 trams in service in Chemnitz, but require replacement as the spare parts are now hard to source. CVAG also wants to improve accessibility across its fleet.

Half of the order’s cost will be paid for from federal funds allocated to the Land of Sachsen. As well as replacing the 10 Tatra trams, four extra vehicles are needed for the opening of Route 3 to Reichenhainer Straße, which is currently under construction.
