Phoenix and Sacramento open light rail extensions
Monday, August 24, 2015

RESIDENTS of Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, and Sacramento, California, are celebrating the latest additions to their city's light rail networks which opened on August 22 and 24 respectively

More than 3500 people rode the 5km extension of Valley Metro Rail's line from Sycamore Main Street to Mesa Drive station for free on August 22, with celebrations held at each of the line's four new stations.

The $US 199m project was delivered seven months ahead of schedule with construction starting in summer 2012. Funding came from a $US 75m grant from the Federal Transport Administration (FTA), $US 71m from a county transport tax, and $US 53m in federal air quality funds

Any idea whether or not Indianapolis has plans to revive their old streetcar system? I've read about the recent developments for a BRT network, but would love to see some rail lines

The Indiana legislature has made it nearly impossible to get any state funding for streetcars/light rail.

USA: California’s Orange County Transportation Authority has selected HNTB Corp to design the OC Streetcar project, which is intended to provide easy ‘last mile’ connections from Metrolink trains and buses to employment, retail and recreational areas.

The line would run 6·6 km from Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center through downtown Santa Ana and along a former Pacific Electric Railway right-of-way to a new multimodal transit hub at Harbor Boulevard and Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove. Serving 10 stops, the line would have a fleet of eight trams

Inekon to supply Oklahoma City Streetcars
30 Sep 2015

USA: Oklahoma City council formally approved a $22m contract on September 29 for Inekon to supply five trams for the Oklahoma Streetcar project, with an option for eight more.

The city council authorised negotiations with Inekon in January. Before the contract is finalised, Inekon must submit proof of required bonds or letters of credit within 30 days.

Deliveries are envisaged to take place between late 2017 and early 2018, in time for the expected start of service in mid-2018. The contract includes penalties of $1 500 per day for late delivery and $1 500 for every day cars are out of service for defects covered by the warranties. These last two years for the batteries, 10 years for the body frames and four years for traction motors. Oklahoma City also has budgeted about $1m for spare parts

El Paso PCC streetcar modernisation contract awarded
28 Oct 2015

USA: Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority has awarded Brookville Equipment Corp an $18·8m contract to overhaul and modernise six PCC streetcars dating from 1937 for use on the future 7·7 km El Paso Streetcar Project in Texas. Brookville said the aim would be to provide ‘a modern transit solution wrapped in a nostalgic, historical package’.

The trams were manufactured by the St Louis Car Co for the San Diego Electric Railway, and later sold to El Paso where they ran to Ciudad Juárez in Mexico until being stored in 1974.

Refurbishment will involve stripping down the vehicles, repairing and replacing structural carbody components and undertaking complete rewiring. Bogies are to be remanufactured, doors upgraded a modern equipment installed including air-conditioning, a wheelchair lift, wi-fi, cycle racks and fareboxes. The vehicles will repainted in heritage liveries

Sarcasm?

Yeah, its basically a circulator and visitor draw, though I think it would be handy for UTEP students.

However streetcars in El Paso lasted unusually late, into he 1970s. So a lot of people have living memories and nostalgia for them. Back when they were still active they were also basically just a downtown shuttle in their later years anyways IIRC.

Planned streetcar openings in America:
http://transitkc.com/?p=1303
  • H Street, Washington, DC - early 2016
  • First Hill, Seattle, WA - early 2016
  • Main Street, Kansas City, MO - April 2016
  • Rampart Street, New Orleans, LA - Spring 2016
  • Downtown, Cincinnati, OH - September 2016
  • Delmar Loop, St. Louis, MO - Late 2016
  • Oak Cliff Extension, Dallas, TX - Late 2016
Which one, in your opinion, will open in time?

Kansas City and Cincinnati streetcars will open in time. Those particular projects are run by professionals.

The Washington DC streetcar will never open.

The rolling stock was delivered a long time ago and has since been subject to a lot of abuse due to at-grade crossing collisions. They may need to put out a tender for new streetcars.

They've been fully repaired, and are still under warranty.
