Air Serbia plans operational changes

Air Serbia will be making a series of changes to its operations during 2017, which will include one of the airline's "biggest technology upgrades", which will "revolutionise" its services, as well as adjustments to its flagship New York service. Furthermore, Banja Luka Airport has suggested modifications to the carrier's flights from Belgrade.

This April, Air Serbia will be migrating to the high-tech IT Sabre system, which the airline has said will provide a "step change" in its business. "The project is one of our biggest technology upgrades in years and will revolutionise the services we offer, at every touch point in your journey", Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, told the "Elevate" magazine publication. He added, "For example, if you are connecting to one of our codeshare flights at Nikola Tesla Airport, our switch to Sabre will allow us to more efficiently manage your transit, ensuring the experience is seamless. Many of the Etihad Airways Partner airlines also use Sabre and our systems will now better communicate and share messages about your journey". The airline has previously said that it is looking to become more "customer centric" in order to better engage and communicate with passengers throughout the whole journey.

On the other hand, Air Serbia will make modifications to its Belgrade - New York service next summer season. According to a preliminary schedule, the Serbian carrier will maintain five weekly flights on the route only during the peak summer months, from June 15 until October 2. Between May 27 and June 12, as well as between October 5 and October 28 (end of the summer season), the airline will operate four weekly flights. Three weekly operations will be run between March 27 (start of the summer season) and May 20, as was the case during most of the 2016/17 winter season. Initially, Air Serbia planned to serve the route five times per week. Last month, Mr Kondić noted that the airline will be "smarter" in planning its flights to New York after having one summer and one winter season of operations behind them. During the first six months, Air Serbia carried over 40.000 passengers between Belgrade and New York, which the carrier says has exceeded its initial expectations. However, the adjustments to the schedule indicate that the route continues to be highly seasonal. At this point it is unclear whether the airline's Airbus A330-200 aircraft will be deployed onto other services during the days it is not operated to and from New York.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Transport in the government of the entity of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nedjo Trninić, has said that changes need to be made to Air Serbia's operations between Belgrade and Banja Luka. The Serbian airline is the only scheduled carrier flying into Bosnia and Herzegovina's second largest city. "We had some informal discussions with Air Serbia's CEO concerning the Banja Luka - Belgrade service and clearly stated that the current situation is unsustainable and that something needs to change. He took note of this and made some suggestions but it is too early to go out in public with these plans", Mr Trninić said. Air Serbia initially launched daily flights to Banja Luka in December 2013. They have since been reduced to three times per week during the winter. In November 2016, the Republika Srpska government ordered the public operator of Banja Luka Airport, Aerodromi Republike Srpske, to extend a ground handling agreement with the Serbian national carrier. As a result, the operator covers Air Serbia's airport costs and fees from December 1, 2016 until November 30, 2017, the government said in a statement. The same terms and conditions have been applied as in previous years. The subsidies are being provided from the entity budget, although the exact figure has not been made public.

I think they are missing YYZ as a destination on their map. Europeans carriers have been fairly pricey, and I find the service to be hit and miss. Correct me if I am wrong, but Austrian's 767 are just about three decades old. I think Air Serbia could give them a good run for the money.

Air Serbia wins ATW award

Air Serbia has been named 2017 Airline Market Leader by Air Transport World (ATW), the leading industry media brand. ATW’s airline awards were established in 1974 to recognise excellence in the air transport industry and are well-respected across the sector for their integrity and independence. The Belgrade-based airline was chosen by ATW’s editorial team for its progress over the last three years. Air Serbia was recognised for its innovative products and services, as well as its business strategies which have differentiated it from competitors in Southeast Europe, while at the same time growing its network, revenue, customer base and brand recognition. It is also the first airline from the region to receive the honour.

Karen Walker, Air Transport World Editor-in-Chief, said, "The Air Serbia story is remarkable, most especially its launch last year of direct flights to New York – resurrecting an air link and reinvigorating a market that had been lost for more than two decades. I congratulate the Air Serbia team on its achievement”. Siniša Mali, the Chairman of the Air Serbia Supervisory Board and the Mayor of Belgrade, added, “Winning this award shows Air Serbia is delivering on its objectives to become a leading airline in the region, but more than that, it puts the airline on the map on a more global scale. The last three years have been an incredible journey for Air Serbia and its employees, and we are proud to see our progress recognised at this level” . Meanwhile, Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, noted, “Flying to the US has been one of our major aspirations from day one, and this award is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of our people at Air Serbia who made it happen. Launching long-haul flights is a complex feat for any airline, especially one the size and young age of Air Serbia, but with our drive, ambition and talented work force, we made it possible". He added, “The vision of our shareholders was to establish an airline that embodied the modern spirit of Serbia and offered a guest experience second-to-none. We have excelled on both fronts and, by doing so, redefined the aviation landscape of Southeast Europe” .

The Airline Market Leader award will be presented to Air Serbia at the ATW’s 43rd Annual Airline Industry Achievement Awards gala night, set to take place in New York on March 28. Other categries include airline of the year, excellence in leadership, value airline of the year, eco-airline of the year, eco-company of the year, onboard experience achievement, excellence in safety, aviation technology achievement and airport of the year.

Air Serbia: No plans to order more wide-bodies

Quote:
Air Serbia has said it has no plans to order additional wide-body aircraft to join its sole Airbus A330-200 jet but has reaffirmed its commitment to maintain long haul flights. Speaking to "Airlineratings", Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, said, "We are currently developing a strategic five-year plan. There are no plans to order more wide-bodies, but looking at it, when you get a second aircraft, you get a lot more synergies as well. If we weren't an Etihad Airways partner there is no way on earth we would have been able to realise the ambition to fly to the United States". He added, "We decided that with EAP [Etihad Airways Partner] synergies and low fuel prices it was now or never for our JFK route. The aircraft [A330-200] comes from Jet Airways in India, the pilots were trained at Alitalia, cabin crew at Etihad, the aircraft are serviced between Rome and Abu Dhabi and our GSA [General Sales Agent] in the US is Etihad. That’s living, breathing proof of synergy in action".

Since launching services to the United States in June 2016, the airline says passenger numbers on the route are 40% above the business plan after the first half year of operations, although yields haven't performed as hoped for, due to less Americans travelling on the route to Europe for fear of terror attacks, according to the airline. "The Balkans is a huge market and all the carriers in the Balkans are broken. We could not start with a clean slate, we inherited all the problems of JAT. We managed to move very quickly and focused on turning this business around. We have done a lot of things here in three years that other airlines wouldn’t do in ten years”, Mr Kondić noted.

The Serbian carrier is preparing to take delivery of ten new Airbus A320neos from next year, which are part of a bulk order from Etihad for 45 aircraft. In an earlier interview, Air Serbia's CEO said, "As one aircraft enters the fleet another will exit it. However, these aeroplanes give us the possibility to access new markets, for example Iran or Central Asia or North Africa. These are destinations that are within a two and a half-hour radius. The Far East is also a potential market for us if you consider relations between Serbia and the People's Republic of China", Mr Kondić said. He added, "We believe that Serbia has enormous potential. When we grow we aim to do it responsibly".

Air Serbia to post 2016 profit

Air Serbia will post a profit for a third consecutive year, the Chairman of the company's Supervisory Board, Siniša Mali, has said, despite increased pressure on costs caused by the launch of transatlantic flights. Speaking in an interview broadcast on national television, Mr Mali said, "It is still unofficial since the financial results have not been released yet but we turned a profit last year in spite of flights to New York, which was the crowning moment of three years of hard work". Mr Mali did not specify the amount of profit the airline recorded in 2016. Air Serbia’s annual financial statements for the previous year, which are independently audited by KPMG in accordance with International Auditing Standards, are usually published between March and May.

Air Serbia posted a 3.9 million euro net profit in 2015. During 2016 the airline launched long haul flights to New York, which undoubtedly had an impact on its business. While the carrier has been encouraged by better than expected passenger demand and revenue from cargo on the route, it has been indicated that the service would likely generate losses during the first two years of operations. Last week, the carrier conceded that yields on the route have not performed as hoped for, due to less Americans travelling to Europe for fear of terror attacks. During 2016, the airline began paying for a number of services at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which it had previously been exempt from under a takeover agreement between Etihad Airways and the Serbian government.

Mr Mali said that with the airline continuing to turn a profit, it is also establishing Belgrade Airport as a regional hub. "Air Serbia is the only national airline out of eleven countries in the region to operate nonstop flights to North America. As a result, Air Serbia, Belgrade Airport and the city of Belgrade benefit from this service. If we are able to finalise talks with China, we will have nonstop flights to one or two Chinese cities. Belgrade is becoming a hub in the aviation sector in this part of Europe", Mr Mali noted. During 2016, Air Serbia's passenger numbers rose to some 2.7 million. In a recent statement, the airline's part-owner, Etihad Airways, said, "Etihad is and remains fully committed to Air Serbia and to the strategic partnership with Air Serbia’s majority owner, the Government of Serbia. Since its relaunch, just over three years ago, Serbia’s national airline has been transformed into a profitable, sustainable, and best-in-class, airline”.

Air Serbia and AtlasGlobal launch partnership

Air Serbia and Turkey's AtlasGlobal have today announced details of a broad commercial partnership that will grow both carrier’s networks. The initial phase of the agreement involves a codeshare deal that will see Air Serbia place its “JU” flight code onto AtlasGlobal’s new daily service between Istanbul Ataturk Airport and Belgrade set to launch on March 15. Following this, and pending government approvals, Air Serbia will also code on AtlasGlobal’s international flights to markets such as Russia, Moldova and Kuwait in the Middle East, as well as domestic flights to additional points in Turkey, all via Istanbul. In return, AtlasGlobal will increase its connectivity by placing its “KK” code on selected Air Serbia regional services in Southeast Europe and its long haul flights to New York. The two carriers are also exploring opportunities to provide passengers frequent flier benefits, including the ability to accrue miles on codeshare flights, and reciprocal premium lounge access at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport and Istanbul Ataturk Airport for eligible travellers.

Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, said “We are pleased to form a new partnership with AtlasGlobal, a carrier which shares our commitment to service excellence. This agreement lays the foundation for many areas of collaboration, including a codeshare deal that will maintain our year-round air link to the Turkish market and enable Air Serbia to provide guests with convenient daily connections to Istanbul". He added, “On top of this increase in connectivity, we are actively exploring ways of enhancing the travel experience that would benefit our mutual guests. AtlasGlobal is a great addition to our list of codeshare partners, who have, collectively, expanded our reach to 127 cities, connecting our business and leisure passengers to more destinations than ever before”. Meanwhile, AtasGlobal's Chief Commercial Officer, Semra Erener Ozalcın, said, “We are delighted to work together with Air Serbia to strengthen our upcoming route between Istanbul and Belgrade and look forward to welcoming Air Serbia’s guests onboard our flights. This is the start of a mutually beneficially relationship that we are confident will continue to evolve and strengthen air connectivity between Turkey and Serbia, bringing our people closer and developing trade and tourism”.
