AIR SERBIA Customer review : 14 April 2014 by I Anderson (UK)

Quote:
I flew London to Belgrade return on a newly fitted Airbus A320 outwards and A319 return. The new Aircraft's have a bright and welcoming interior which sets the scene for their product offering. The crew were polite and attentive throughout the flight, although perhaps a little cool in their interactions with passengers. On the outward flight newspapers were offered. A menu on both flights was presented which was a nice touch. The food itself was excellent for a short-haul flight - hot, plentiful and served with metal cutlery. Certainly the best on board food in Europe. Boarding at Belgrade however is still not well organised should be improved. Overall though a great experience and fantastic to see a new full service Airline come from the ashes of JAT.

Keep in mind, in the future, the widebody birds would reduce the congestion by snagging decent traffic at the certain times. That would eliminate some oversaturated connections being offered by almost every carrier from the Western Europe. I am sure Delta and Emirates would snag some decent loads that would have some serious impact on the rest.
For the short term, I am not too afraid about congestion. I am afraid about what happens behind the scenes. The handling, baggage, and cargo systems need major upgrades.

In a few years, there will need to be major capacity upgrade if growth continues, and I think the best option is another terminal that is built to modern standards (central security is a must).

Delta won't start flying to BEG anytime soon. I can absolutely guarantee it. They don't fly to Bucharest, Budapest, or Vienna. Belgrade is last on their list. The best chance for BEG to get long haul flights is by Air Serbia. All other alliances only want to funnel passengers through their main hubs. Also, I doubt Emirates will fly to BEG anytime soon. The flydubai flights have been doing well from what I hear, but not well enough to justify upgrading to a widebody.

I agree about you on JU and longhaul, but this is how I see the rest. Speaking about Vienna, there is a limited space just for one airline and that is Austrian. Budapest has always been low yielding traffic, but the traffic is very artificially jacked up by LC carriers. So 9M figure at Budapest is there just for the looks. Bucharest on the other hand was given a chance, but the big players dumped the fares that summer, and that was it.

Your point about Vienna is good. I didn't think of that. Austrian already has that market cornered. Delta also probably won't return to Bucharest if they got dumped out by LH and gang.

Even though Budapest is famous for being low yielding, they can't be much lower yielding than Belgrade. I still think that Budapest is above Belgrade in the queue.

Still, all the major alliances are pretty happy funneling passengers through their hubs, so I doubt that any major carrier will be willing to start transatlantic flights to Serbia anytime soon. The best chance we have is JU starting transatlantic flights, which might happen in a few years. They are certainly building a great network.

I mentioned back in january in the Serbian forum that EK will open 5 new Euro destinations this year: Oslo, Brussels, Belgrade, Bucharest, Budapest. Oslo will open on 2nd September 2014, Brussels is set to open on the 5th September 2014, with both flights going daily B77W. BEG is expected to be 5x weekly and replacing FZ. FlyDubai have been doing very bad since EY and JU came into the picture, with alot of flights not filing even 50%. EY definately needs to upgauge the A319 to a A320 minimum, their flights are always full.

Well, BEG has been in the eyes of EK for a while now. When I mentioned it in the Serbian forum, someone posted that they had applied for 5 weekly flights to BEG. There was a leak I read somewhere from someone in EK who had mentioned these 5 cities. So far, 2 of 5 is correct. If I find the link I will post it.

Besides, Eastern Europe is a black hole in the EK network. EK recently opened some support centre (I believe call centre) in Budapest to assist the one in the UK, Manchester I believe, so I wouldnt be surprised to see Budapest be next announced, followed by Belgrade.

I would like to see AS 'complete' its Balkan network by adding Zagreb, Pula, & Tirana in the the next wave, and Cluj-Napoca, Prishtina, Chisinau and Nish in the following wave. By adding these seven cities to the network I think the Balkans (S.E.Europe) would have excellent coverage.

Tirana will be the next destination to be opened in the region. The problem with JU is the lack of ATR a/c. Hopefully more will come
