very true, most of the new buildings in Glenelg are pretty ordinary designs IMO, but I suspect the opposition was more in relation to the height rather than the quality of the design

I agree, whilst I believe that Marina Pier and the Marina East buildings are attractive, sadly the same can't be said about the Light's Landing building or the facade of the Ramada Hotel that fronts Colley Reserve. The Platinum apartment building is also not very attractive.

The model's on display at Makris' North Adelaide Village on O'Connell Street.

Here are a few pics. Sorry about the second one. I had to turn off the flash as it was reflecting really badly off the window at that angle:

They had brochures by the door with renderings etc on them. I'll scan it through a bit later on.

No probs mate.

I like the way he's left out a front-on shot in the brochure. Thinly veiled attempt to convince the NIMBYs that it's not that imposing a development. Won't work sadly.

I reckon they've done a pretty good job with the setbacks though.

thanks for all your efforts Pants
while I don't think this development is especially interesting architecturally, I do think they've made a decent go at making the buildings fit into their context. This development would also help vibe up Nth Adelaide a bit - good luck to them

My feelings exactly mate. I seem to be agreeing with you alot lately.

Before it was unveiled, I had hoped that it would be something special architecturally - being such a landmark development - but didn't hold out too much hope because of the developer.

I can understand why Makris has gone this fairly safe route though and still think it'll be a great addition to the city.

50 bucks says this will take at least 3 years to BUILD and it will be another liberty-towers thing which will turn north adelaide into the next glenleg.

North Adelaide is famous for its beaches.

Ha ha ha! ROFL. Good one.

Thanks again pants - really appreciate your stuff.

I was actually hoping for something more dramatic but I guess anything will do as long as it goes ahead.

I don't like the look of it much. But then again, I pretty much hate everything not made of sandstone.

I hope it goes ahead. If it were being built in another capital city it would hardly raise an eyebrow. North Adelaide is is the home of NIMBY people who love their own 'shit'.

Whilst the development isn't anything extraordinary, I find it attractive and believe it will be a great addition to the whole of Adelaide.

We should do our bit and help progress by sending letters of support to the Makris Group.

Granted, it's not spectacular, but at least it fills the gap. One less eyesore.

Finally some news on the Consultation... you can all get in on the process as far as I'm aware... here's a repost of what i wrote on Sensational-Adelaide forums.

Quote:
Check out the webpage that the city council just put up about the consultation http://www.adelaide.sa.gov.au/counci...r_le_cornu.htm

Loads of information, including 3 possible outcomes for the Makris group (who currently owns the land).

1st one is a very basic street level complex,
2nd is a higher level complex.
3rd is the render of what we've all seen, which is mixed retail/apartment with leisure and cinema facilities.

Obviously third would be preferable for most of us. There's also a questionaire to fill out on the site, as far as i know anyone can fill it out. You give you preference and they'll take it into consideration.

It closes on august 1st 2005, so get in quick.
