hkskyline's 2013 in FUKUOKA

Fukuoka was once Japan's gateway to Asia. Today, it is a modern metropolis of some 1.5 million people. Pockets of heritage remain. Shofukuji is Japan's first Zen Buddhist temple. The temple's founder also introduced tea to Japan, planting the first tea bushes on the temple's grounds.

Kushida Shrine is Fukuoka's oldest, believed to have been founded in the 8th century. The current structure dates back to the late 16th century. Visitors come here to pray for longevity and business success.

Nakasu is an island in the heart of Fukuoka's shopping and office districts. At night, it becomes an outdoor eating destination, with numerous street stalls offering all sorts of great food.

ACROS is a cultural centre with a terraced garden on one side facing Tenjin Central Park. Lots of shrubs and tall trees line the staircases and passages, making it feel like a forest in the city. While the top part is only open on weekends, the views from the terrace are still very good.

Fukuoka Castle was originally completed in 1608 after 7 years of consruction. Although not much is left today, visitors can still find nice views of the city on top of an observatory tower.

A 1-day subway pass costs only 600 yen, which will easily pay off after a day of sightseeing.

Japanese cities seem to be always neat and anyone city has always this traditional architecture of either a temple or a palace.
great photos too.

Dazaifu was once the Kyushu government centre and was established some 1300 years ago. Now, it is a small city just outside Fukuoka, easily accessible by a 30-minute train ride.

Umegae-mochi is a local rice cake that was believed to ward off sickness. Expect to pay 100 yen each.

Komyozenji is a small temple just off the pedestrianized shopping street and features a lovely Zen garden.

Dazaifu is a small city with quiet, narrow streets. Further up this street is the Kyushu National Museum, which showcases Japan's cultural exchange with the rest of Asia.

Tenmangu dates from the 10th century and is favoured by students wishing for good luck on their examinations. In 909, a prominent scholar was exiled and died here, and a shrine was built in his memory.

BTW, your photos are of high quality...impressive.

These photos are really, really good. Fukuoka is next on my list of cities in Japan to visit as I've not been to Kyushu yet.

Mojiko was designated as a special trade port in 1889 and soon became very prosperous. Numerous historical buildings remain from that era and are clustered around the waterfront. Pictured below is Mojiko Station, covered up for renovations slated to complete in 2018. It was entirely built of wood and opened in 1914.

The Former Moji Mitsui Club was built in 1921 to receive clients. Albert Einstein stayed here with his wife in 1922.

The Osaka Shosen Mercantile Steamship Co. building was built in 1917 in the Vienna Succession style.

Port House is now a souvenir centre, with the first floor devoted to marine products, such as these delicious seafood snacks. Like in many food outlets across Japan, they are very happy to see you sample to your content!

The Customs Building was built in 1912 and is now an art gallery with no admission charge.

The Kitakyushu Commemorative Library of International Friendship looked very familiar. In fact, it is a copy of the Chinese Eastern Railway Office in Dalian, which was built by the Russians. This building commemorates the 15th anniversary of the friendship between Kitakyushu and Dalian.

The Mojiko Retro Observation Room is located on the 31st floor (103m) of a residential building and offers a lovely view of the historic area and the Kanmon Strait.

Across the water is Honshu, Japan's largest island. Shimonoseki is quite easily accessible from Mojiko by train, car, or foot.

North of the city, Kanmonkyo is the only bridge connection between Kyushu and Honshu. The bridge is 1068m long and spans 61m above the water.
