Work to start on new 92-storey mega tower in central Melbourne

WORK on one of the nation’s tallest buildings is due to start soon in Melbourne.

Probuild Constructions has been chosen to erect the 92-storey Aurora Melbourne Central tower planned for La Trobe St.

About 95 per cent of units have been sold for the skyscraper, which will feature 941 residential apartments, 250 serviced units, shops and offices.

Aurora will also have an underground link to the Melbourne Central, Emporium, Myer and David Jones retail precincts.

The tower will be 286m high, Australia’s third tallest after Eureka (297m) and Gold Coast’s Q1 (323m).

However, the proposed Australia 108 apartment tower in Southbank will be 317m high.

Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib, CEO of Malaysian developer UEM Sunrise Berhad, said talks would be held with Probuild over the next few months to work out design and contract details.

“We target to commence site works by June 2015,” he said.

Probuild group managing director Simon Gray said: “We are thrilled by the opportunity to hit the ground running on this truly iconic project.”

One-bedroom units cost from $394,500.

For the record both the thread title and article are wrong this tower will be 271m above from lowest point to highest. It will however be 286m above sea level putting its roof only 14m below Eureka making it one of the tallest structures visible on the skyline envelope.

This would look totally awesome in Melbourne's already cool skyline.

So they were targeting June for a start. Has anyone seen any action on this one?

Tenants of the shops on-site are being moved out, should get started with demo of the carpark soon.

Also, official height of this tower 269m not 267m.

Demolition Contractors have setup their site office today so demolition shouldn't be too far away now possibly as soon as next week.

Biggest news to report is the train station sign has come down and they've removed the bike lane dividers from LaTrobe St ..

.. presumably to install the gantries planned for the LaTrobe St frontage

The one in the lower middle of the shot would be the pylon at right rear of the render.

Here's an earlier shot showing the big ass cutting machine in action to dig out that pylon base ..

Will update this thread later in the day to see the outcome of the big crane movements. Perhaps installing the first of Aurora's construction cranes ? Tho I'm not sure if they have a base ready to mount it yet.

UPDATE: My eye in the sky has sent me these overhead shots and here is the first pre cast section of the new staircase entry to the train station being installed !!!

They're putting up the hoardings on the Little LaTrobe St side as well so might be tough viewing till it gets above ground !

Either way gonna be a heck of a core slab pour soon ..

Surprisingly no signage on crane apart from UEM Sunrise on back of booth but then they may be saving that for the central core crane.

Hard to see from that angle in the last shot but the lift core pit is super deep now.

Still taking forever for I&D to finish that bloody staircase so they can get rid off r ramp - hardly any progress in the almost month I've been away but doesn't seem to be slowing them down elsewhere around site.

Speaking of ramps the one into the pit is now all but gone so I wonder how they will get the diggers and huge mobile crane that's down there out ?
