Liège tram bidders shortlisted
07 Apr 2014

BELGIUM: Société Régionale Wallonne du Transport announced on April 3 that two bidders have been shortlisted to build a tram line in Liège:
  • The Legiaexpress consortium of Vinci Concessions, CFE, Bombardier Transportation and Meridiam Infrastructure Finance II;
  • The MobiLège consortium of Alstom Transport, BAM PPP PGGM Infrastructure Co-operative, DG Ingra and SRIW Environment.
The Tramardent consortium of Colas, Wegebo, VBG, DIF Infra 3 PPP and CAF was not shortlisted and will receive €1·2m as compensation for bidding costs. The fourth prequalified consortium, Mobilidje, withdrew from the tender in June 2013.

The 11 km north-south route would link the Standard Liège football stadium in Seraing to Bressoux via the city centre with 21 stops. It would be operated by a fleet of 19 trams 45 m long and 2 650 mm wide, which would be stabled at a depot at Bressoux.

On February 17 the general building permit was granted, and the two shortlisted bidders are to present their final offers on September 15. Opening is expected in 2017.

In 2017 it won't be first time for the city of Liège to operate a tram line. Between 1871 and 1967, trams were a commun sight in the walloon city. But then were considered a thing of the past. Ironically, 50 years later, the tram will roll again, but now being considered the transport solution of the future...

Preferred bidder chosen for Liége light rail PPP
Wednesday, December 10, 2014

THE general director of Wallonia Regional Transport (SRWT) Mr Jean-Marc Vandenbroucke announced on December 10 that Mobiliége, a consortium led by Alstom and construction group BAM, has been selected as preferred bidder for a PPP contract to design, build, operate, and maintain the first modern light rail line in the Belgian city of Liége

Two shortlisted bidders, Mobiliége and LegiaExpress (Bombardier and Vinci) submitted best and final offers for the project on September 15. SWRT will now begin final negotiations with the preferred bidder but it says LegiaExpress will remain in reserve until talks with Mobiliége conclude. The 30.5 year contract, which includes a 3.5-year construction period and a 27-year operating term, is due to be signed in the second quarter of next year with the aim of commissioning the line in the second half of 2018.

The initial phase of the project involves construction of a 12.5km line with 21 stations following the north bank of the river Meuse from the Standard Liège stadium in the west to Liège-Guillemins station and Coronmeuse in the city centre, with a short branch crossing the river to serve Bressoux station. In the longer term, the line will be extended west to Jemeppe Bus Station and northeast to Herstal, giving a total length of 18.9km

I read somewhere that there is even an unused metro tunnel under the river Meuse. Would be cool if they reused it for the tram.
