Restructuring this section

Hi guys,

Since this section seems to get a good number of posts and visitors, I think it might be time to add a few subforums to this one.

For starters I think we can do a separate subforum on airports, and one on airline carriers.

Ideas welcome, cheers!

Its an idea I am willing to pilot with if the forumers would like to try. And if it does not work we can easily reverse this.

it would be much easier to find the threads if we divide them into two section

Maybe in 3 sections would be even better:

-Airports and infrastructure
-Airlines and business issues
-Aircrafts and techinical issues

I'm not sure about it. I don't think it's busy enough and further subdivisions could make things worse.

I guess more uniformization would be welcomed. For instance, there are too many threads and I believe they should be grouped for countries as in the highway section.

Splitting airports and airlines would be a good measure (this is how it was organized before last forum shuffle)

The Aircrafts, Technical Issues, and News/Discussion will still be separate from the two subforums in the general forum area.

Jan, perhaps you want to add a poll to the topic?

Perhaps create a list of links to aviation sections within the area forums here...

There are so many aviation sections in the national forums (eg. Philippines, India) as well as airport-related threads in national sections (eg. "ADP"(=the Parisian airports operator) in the French Infrastructure section or "Schiphol" in the Amsterdam section or "Miami Airport" in the Miami section - probably many more.
As a "hard core" aviation enthusiast I try to look up as many of these sections as I expect to contain news when I visit skyscrapercity. Example: Tokyo Airport Haneda opened an extension to its international terminal on March 30th, so I spent a lot of time in the Japanese forum to catch the images of it as soon as they were posted.
Thankfully, member simba32 cross-posted his earlier contribution in the Japan forum to this section a few days ago.
Earlier, when Mumbai T2 opened, Indian members acted in the same manner with posts from the India forum.

However, I would have an easier time of it if there was a sticky thread with a list of sections from all over skyscrapercity that expressly cover airports and aviation.
Is that at all possible?

Can I suggest the consolidation of duplicate threads? We have for example 2 x SYD Discussion threads & 2 x TLV...???

My Suggestion:

- Airports Section (each airport/airport cluster to have its own thread)
- Aircraft Section (Threads for everything from Airbus, Boeing and all other manufacturers)
- Incidents Section (Threads for each and every major air accent or incident and not in one thread)
- Carriers Section (Business section for each carrier and air alliance)
- Aviation Lounge (Everything else that isn't in the above 4 labels and all historical aviation talk in this section)

5 simple sections that should be easy to follow.

- Trip Reports
- Airlines
- Airports
- Technical Discussion (not sure if this is viable given airliners.net has a far larger pool of experts)

I might vote for this one. It easy to navigate with this type of sub-forums.

I would go for the 2 new sections suggested by Jan.

* Airports: seperate thread for major airports, other airports can have a country / regional thread.

example:
* CDG Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport thread
* Paris other Airports thread
* France other Airports thread

* Airlines: seperate thread for Major airlines (airline groups), other airlines can have a country or a group thread.

example:
* AA thread
* United thread
* Delta thread
* Other National US carriers thread
* US LCC carriers thread

This gives the front page enough room for the aircraft threads, more trip report threads and major incident threads. If any of these categories becomes too dominating they can still have a seperate section in the future.

To hide them in the "geberal forum area" means the same fate as the "general forum area of other sections: no chances to develop! Therefore I would suggest to make 3-5 sections, without a "hidden" "general area" which never atracts...

Momo's post sums up what I agree could work best, and I'm sensing there is some sort of a consensus to see if that could work. If not, we can still move everything back. I'll add this to my to-do list.

I will second the idea of splitting the two entirely. It will be much easier to navigate through the clutter. But here's my question, will the existing threads be kept or will somebody undertake the arduous task of categorizing them?

The latter would be ideal, but for many large super threads, it will be very challenging and onerous to separate out. I think you may see a mix of new and old threads.

It won't be hidden; the set up will be no different than the current General Developments and Discussion Section where Bridges, Cycling, and Maritime serve as sub-forums.

The benefit of separating into subforums is organisation and structure, but the downside is segregating discussion. A subforum should not be created unless there is sustainable traffic and activity to prevent creating "dead/low traffic" forums.

Thus I too agree with Momo and we will continue to monitor the traffic/discussion activity in case certain categories can support a subforum. For the most part, because the existing forum naming structure already categorises threads, this would be very easy and quick to implement.
