The scale and design for West Harbour City look fantastic. The podium at 11 stories looks very urban and that stretch with Malibou and WaterParkCity will all have similarily scaled podiums. The hieght looks perfect for the area and the tower emphasizes verticallity.
It looks to be a bit of a cross between Citygate in Mississauga which was very well executed and the towers at Bay and Wellesley. Perhaps what I like about West Harbour City best is that it isn't another green/blue curtain wall condo on the waterfront. For once we are getting something different and it is about time. While I do like some of Cityplace, WaterParkCity and Waterclub - it's just too many very similar towers - West Harbour City will certainly be something different. It has a heavier more urban feel to it and I hope that it will be a great waterfront development.
The developer of West Harbour City always has these fantastic rendering for buildings that eventually turn out either bland or extemely ugly - I'm a little worried about this one
That area around Skydome and the CN Tower -- ( the dome opened in 1989, and the convention center in the mid 1980's) a short 10 years ago there was nothing there but the Convention Center and Roy Thompson Hall. Before that, it was a wasteland downtown... a huge freaking parking lot around the CN Tower and railway tracks.
It truly is stunning how dramatically the area has changed --- and there is so much more to come!
And Westharbourcity is just one of many!
I don't think there are than many NIMBYS in the area. As for blocking off the waterfront / saving the Gardiner, that battle was - thankfully -lost long ago!
At worst, it will be one of so many buildings that the buildings will get lost in the blur -- unless there are some North York worthy horrors, no one will notice any of the buildings. People cannot help but notice Cityplace. But can they notice any building in particular? Are the trees lost because of the forest?
However, perhaps this one has a chance to stick out-- like the Waterclub does.
There is a risk-- with all of this pre- cast, that it could turn out freaking not -so -great, North York horror show.
