MECA The Aquitaine House for Creative Economy and Culture | Quartier Bordeaux Sud | Euratlantique | BIG and FREAKS Freearchitects | €50 millions | U/C summer 2015 | Opening 2017

Quote:
Seen as a future icon for the area surrounding Bordeaux's main railway station, the MÉCA development merges three cultural entities into a single institution: the Aquitaine House for Creative Economy and Culture. Integrated in the city's waterfront promenade (a 10 km pedestrian and bicycle path will run along both river banks), the project is centred on an outdoor 'urban room' that opens up towards both the city and the river and may act as an outdoor stage or gallery. Estimated completion date is 2017.

A building integrated in the waterfront promenade of Bordeaux that will allow public life to flow through the MECA rather than merely surrounding it.
The three institutions and their shared facilities are gathered around a public space framing a fifth program - an outdoor urban room - open towards both Bordeaux and the Garonne - as well as the OARA, ECLA and FRAC - left, right, above and below. The urban room will frame the everyday life of Bordeaux flowing through its generous frame along the promenade or to and from the river and on special occasions it will turn in to an urban stage, or an outdoor gallery to extend the art into the city as well as the city into the architecture.
The framework and promenade is clad in the stone that constitute the material of most of Bordeaux's architecture. As if carved from the same material as the city itself, the stone is both promenade and façade, stair and terrace, roof and ceiling.

The urban room is at once a frame for the artwork, a stage for the performances, a screening room for the media collections and most perhaps most importantly an open room for the urban life of Bordeaux to invade and engage with the arts.

Some Updates for Bordeaux Euratlantique I posted in the forum PSS archi Bordeaux

The EU will finance about thirty transport projects in France

©ARCHIVES STÉPHANE LARTIGUE

Quote:
The maritime regions, however, can count on European support. The Grand Port of Bordeaux, who had filed 4 projects in February, will be accompanied on two of them: Rail2Bordeaux who harvest 9.8 million euros of European funds to improve rail service to the Port and Gironde XL (4 million EU funding of €) intended to accommodate big ships.
