Promenade Sainte Catherine | Quartier Bordeaux Centre | €105 Investment | Luxury residencial and retail project | Opening September 2015

Quote:
The Promenade Sainte-Catherine brings a breath of fresh air to downtown Bordeaux, where there is a concentrated and constant stream of pedestrians from the Rue Sainte-Catherine and around the Porte Dijeaux.
As the true “lungs” of the city, the Promenade promises to become the most popular shopping area for Bordeaux residents and the many tourists drawn to France’s 3rd largest city.

Everything has been designed to make the Promenade as beautiful and pleasant as possible for visitors.

Trees, shrubbery, skillful landscaping, and a reflecting pool surrounded by terraces and natural furniture invite you to take a moment to fully enjoy the quiet simplicity of a relaxing break.

We’re not in the woods, of course…we’re in an urban oasis that provides a refreshing, airy reflection of the city itself!

19,000 sq.m of retail space

This new pedestrian area, made up of a lush green square, streets, and terraces, will become home to top-notch retailers with opportunities for average surface areas of over 1,000 sq.m in Bordeaux’s historic downtown.

A new shopping area in place of the old Sud Ouest printing works
The Promenade Sainte Catherine creates a strong link between tradition and modernity by drawing on the region’s cultural heritage and investing in this abandoned, once-great space located above an ancient Gallo-Roman port in order to build a complex that is in keeping with the surrounding architecture and strongly marked by the stamp of modernity.

This startling combination transforms the surrounding industrial wasteland, traces the lines of the city’s thoroughfares, and beautifies this rundown area of the city, much to the delight of residents and future passersby.

A lot of these, in my opinion, just look so bad and out of place in an ancient city like Bordeaux.

That's great to know.

I just hope now that at the end it would be a lot of vegetation and green space to refresh the site.

I think all of them, except for the Saint-Catherine project shown here on this page, are outside of inner Bordeaux and will be built on unused land or on former industrial, railway, dockland etc. properties in and around the connurbation's peripheries.

That's right. And even most of the projects in the thread are within Bordeaux itself, in former industrial land as you said.

Gare Saint Jean côté Belcier | Quartier Bordeaux Sud | Euratlantique | €55 millions | Opening 2017 | U/C

The station extension project for 2016

The traffic at the Bordeaux Saint Jean station will double over the next ten years. At the moment the number of travellers stands at 9 million (3 times more than the Bordeaux – Mérignac airport). The number of travellers estimated in 2020, with the arrival of the three high-speed lines, will be between 18 and 20 million. In order to meet the needs of these new passengers, a station extension project is currently being studied. It is being undertaken by the French Rail Network (RFF) and its subsidiary ‘Gare et Connexion’ with the project management provided by AREP, the development agency in charge of the High-Speed Train (TGV) stations.

The project will be developed on the current site of the station (tracks and the Belcier triangle) with the creation of a new building on the Belcier side. The back of the station is being redeveloped to provide a second facade.

The project includes plans for building a car park with a capacity of 1,500 to 1,700 and developing services for travellers and businesses as well as an additional programme that has yet to be defined.

The work of integrating this key facility into the district as well as seeking to improve urban links between the Belcier sector and the Saint Jean sector will also be an important part of this project.

The delivery date for the first phase of the station extension is 2017, coinciding with the arrival of the first high-speed line linking Tours and Bordeaux and the reduction in travel time between Bordeaux to Paris to 2 hours.

Why must every project include excessive amounts of glass?

Quite frankly I think the winning one is way better.

^that looks great

BTW there's never enough glass. From the array of contemporary materials, glass is easily the best looking and the easiest to mantain. Because I doubt we'll go back to cladding with polished stone or with marble, due to costs.
