It has an incredible aqustic. Sinan worked on its aqustic for months and put some special parts on the walls and the dome for a better sound. He was checking the aqustic by smoking nargile (Turkish Pipe) in the building. The voice of the water was ecoing.

suleymaniye in 1985

I visited Istanbul in the summer of 1985, so about 20 years ago. I can remember my visit to the Suleymaniye as very impressive. The feeling of space when you enter the mosque is overwhelming. Your attention is drawn to the building itself and not so much like in Italian baroque churches to all kinds of paintings/statues etc.

"Here Sinan demonstrated his transformation of the Hagia Sophia plan from which he had drawn his inspiration: his dome is buttressed by two half-domes and two typanum walls."

"Sinan's solution of putting four minarets at the corners of his arcaded courtyard (inspired by the atrium) sets up a counterpoint between a solid volume on the mosque side and a 'negative' space on the courtyard side."

—Henri Stierlin. Comprende l'Architecture universelle

Süleymaniye Mosque, which is one of Sinan's foreman's piece', was built by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in 1557. The mosque seemed to symbolise the genius of Sinan's architecture and the power of Süleyman. The composition of the great dome inner space illustrates the culmination of Ottoman mosque design. Rumour has it that the 4 minarets on both sides of its court meant that the sultan who had it built was the 4th ruler as from the conquest of Istanbul and the total number of the minaret balconies mean that Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent was the 10th sultan after Sultan Osman Ghazi who founded the Ottoman State. The dome is 53 m high and has a diamater of 26,5 m. Sinan called it "my journeyman work".
