DUS | Düsseldorf Airport

From wiki:
Quote:
Düsseldorf Airport (German: Flughafen Düsseldorf; until March 2013 Düsseldorf International Airport; IATA: DUS, ICAO: EDDL) is the international airport of Düsseldorf, the capital of the German state North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the third largest airport in Germany after Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport,[2] handling 20.8 million passengers in 2012 and serves as a hub for Air Berlin and Lufthansa including Lufthansa Regional. The airport is located approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of downtown Düsseldorf, and some 20 kilometres (12 mi) south-west of Essen in the Rhine-Ruhr area, Germany's largest metropolitan area

I was surprised that there wasn't a thread for Germany's 3rd largest airport, so I created one.

Great to see Dusseldorf added, it looks a big modern airport.

Air Berlin does flights to Fort Myers Florida in the USA. Couple times weekly depending on the season.

First time here, and my impression of DUS is it is a great alternate gateway airport to Germany if one does not want to go through FRA (MUC is a good alternative too). And the list of long-haul services from the city is quite wonderful, with a good number of daily services.

Perhaps my first question about the airport is: is Air Berlin considering to expand its operations out of DUS even further for more long-haul flights? I mean, it now operates multiple daily services to both regional and long-haul destinations, yet, I think its potential can be tapped even more to compete against FRA.

AB is offering more long-haul flights as mentioned above but these are just holiday destinations. Due to oneworld membership AB expanded to JFK, ORD, MIA in the past as well as AUH due to EY partnership. As there won't be any more long-haul aircrafts coming in the near future (B787 order cancelled) it's doubtful to see any new destinations.
For short and medium destinations we will see more competition from Lufthansa by germanwings and soon eurowings. LH (op. by LH CityLine) will add some long-haul routes from CGN soon. Let's see what FR and EZY will do as FR targets 20% market share in Germany.
