Its interesting to look at the differences between the engravings and current appearence of the buildings. There are some general trends. Many of the palaces have had their facades simplified since the 1600's. Most of that happened during the 1700's when the fashion was for simpler, cleaner facades. Basically the difference between baroque and classicism. The elaborate baroque gardens have often been completely or at least partially replaced by more "English style" gardens, usually in the 19th century.
