I think this is more a piece of sculpture to decorate square than a legendary monument.. But im open to another opinions and different points of view..
People want to visit the eifel tower because of its symbolic value and for being a legendary monument but mainly because it have a unique view over the entire city of Paris. How is this going to be attractive to tourists?
Why do tourists go to times square? It's just a wall of advertising in a intersection. This will never be the Eiffel Tower, but I think it will become a focus point for both locals and tourists alike. Lots of shopping, restaurants, the high-line, easy access, central location, unique architecture, tons of reason.

To be honest I'm quite sure The Vessel was designed by people who know of the existence of sites like Instagram, because just thinking about it, I can think of about a million possibilities to make some really amazing photos with it.

Yeah who in their right mind would go to Chicago and get their picture taken with a large chromized bean. Weird.

I would just climb it to have seen the site from a level that is just right to see over the park and the high line, but still make out every detail (if it is free to do so). The observation deck at 30 HY is too high to do that. I almost prefer Top of the Rock to the Empire State Building because it is lower and feels more like you're inside the jungle. The supertree walkway in Singapore also only has a height of 22 meters yet the view is still really cool. Remember Vessel will be surrounded by skyscrapers which will certainly make for some cool photo opportunities!

It's looking better and better as it grows. When I first saw the render I thought it looked like an old wicker basket on some ancient farm, but the real thing is the exact opposite, looking more Scy-Fi every day. This whole complex will be so futuristic.

It's inspired by an old Indian step well. I don't get a sci-fi feel, I think it resembles something very ancient.

Good observation about the stepwell. I get both. It's a sci-fi stepwell.

...There is nothing sci-fi about the whole HY project.
Sci-fi architecture is mostly in Asia; a genius like Steven Holl works mainly in China while the stupendous Eric Owen Moss is little known beyond beautiful Los Angeles(Culver City?)
