Presumably like a regular elevator would; pulled by cable but kept in place by guiderails.

yes but how do they keep the floor level as the shaft changes slope?

Or is that just a fanciful rendering and the actual shaft will be straight?

Render of Vessel's interior with the elevator channel at the bottom:

Its still not really that helpful for the mechanics of the elevator I admit.

From the event where Vessel was unveiled:

They actually assembled the bottom third of Vessel in Italy at the fabricators facility.

That's Heatherwick in the vest btw.

Apparently the parts of Vessel that are already in New York in the Western Yards are too heavy to be transported across 11th Avenue and Related Companies needs to strengthen the road before the city will allow the parts to cross the street to begin assembly.

Might be a funicular type system.

Jesus, chill out. Design is subjective. Just cause you like something and another person disagrees doesn't mean someone should be banned. Get over yourself.

I've lost count of the number of your posts I've had to report.

She literally just quoted Riley's hyperbole with a couple of words swapped. I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny...

That elevator shaft looks really awkward. They could have done a better job integrating it. Or should have kept it in the middle, with walkways extending out to the edges.

Its a very interesting concept/structure. It looks dangerous though How are they going to secure and prevent people from jumping/ being thrown off?

I would just expect it to have normal railings. You would just hope for the common sense of the people not to climb over the railing and fall. Even though it seems like quite a tall structure I don't think people would try and commit suicide by jumping from that, since it is not so high to assure certain death upon impact. We have a TV mast near my town with an observation deck that is located 130 feet above ground and accessible by outside stairs, and as far as I'm concermed no one has ever fallen or jumped from it. Sorry for the slightly off topic post/reply. Does anyone know when Vessel is supposed to start assembly in the HY site?

It has a actually been a bit delayed. The pieces arrived from Italy a few months ago and are sitting just west of 11th Ave. The site of assembly is just east of 11th Ave, but they've recently realized that they need to reinforce 11th Ave (reinforce the road itself) in order to bear the weight of the pieces. The crane is already set up, so once they do that, they'll be able to cross the road with the pieces and assemble. (hopefully this process doesn't take to long)

I don't think the model is accurate. Judging by other recent "parks" in New York City, the final result will have three trees and around fifteen blades of grass.

The inspiration for Vessel was from the Chand Baori Stepwell in India:

"Hmm we have to make a nice, creative and impressive monument in the heart of the Hudson Yards in New York City, one of the most modern and biggest architectural projects in the biggest city in the United States. We have to do something that truly shows the spirit of the city that never sleeps so it will become a true landmark of this country. What should we do?"

"Let's do one of those indian wells"
