Actually, it's a pretty interesting contrast to newly built cities such as some in China, Dubai, etc.
well, Dubai is probably one of the few other cities that have had this thin tower trend in the past actually. Also due to a high-class residential boom. But yes, most other cities in the world luckily do not follow this trend on a district- or citywise scale. This tower is one of the better examples for me though, it is doing the thin tower thing in a good design that is not overdoing it.

I look forward to this stunning tower and to the Islamic Cultural Center.

Is there a design yet for the cultural center?

It was depicted in one of the renderings, though I don't know if it's final.

I just like the idea of the center to teach people about Islam.

Au contraire, this is the perfect time to build an Islamic cultural center and museum. When ignorance abounds, the only solution is education.

I absolutely love the design of this building.

Demolition to Commence at Soho Properties’ 45 Park Place
By Lauren Elkies Schram 1/05 5:50pm

Quote:
Soho Properties has received demolition permits for the site at 45 Park Place, according to the city’s Department of Buildings. The permits allow for the the wrecking of a five-story as well as a four-story building.

The firm, run by Sharif El-Gamal, plans to begin removal of the exterior details of the existing building as early as next Monday, a spokeswoman for Mr. El-Gamal said. Full demolition is slated to begin shortly thereafter, paving the way for development of a condominium tower and then the Jean Nouvel-designed museum, Mr. El-Gamal’s spokeswoman indicated.

“The commencement of demolition represents an important milestone for us in the development of 45 Park Place—the first step in the realization of something truly extraordinary and a contribution to the renaissance of Tribeca and Lower Manhattan,” Mr. Sharif said in a prepared statement. Soho Properties filed plans with the city for the project’s construction in May, as Commercial Observer previously reported.

Designed by architect Michel Abboud of SOMA Architects, with Ismael Leyva Architects, the residential building will be a concrete tower with glass curtain wall facade, Mr. El-Gamal’s spokeswoman said. The residential tower will rise 665 feet. Construction is slated to begin this year and occupancy is slated for 2017. The museum will be completed shortly after the residential building.

Park51 officially opened its doors as a cultural and community center at 45-51 Park Place in September 2011, a year after controversy ensued following announcement of plans for a 15-story Muslim institution two blocks from the World Trade Center.

It should be shoved in people's faces how many hundreds of millions of Muslims live peaceful lives and have not the slightest hint of extremist views in their minds. Seems like a perfect location for it.

I have mixed feelings, while I agree with you there's certainly part of me that thinks it's in poor taste considering the attack was done in the name of 'islam' by 'muslims'. I'm not saying they're all like that but still, it's the principal of it.

But then of course everyone could benefit from being more open minded so there's that.

There's been a considerable period of time since 9-11 and the World Trade Center complex now will have four towers(5 if you count WTC7) so it's coming back bigger and better, so the time for this particular building is fine at this point in time. Cultural understanding across religious lines is certainly in a diverse society something we should encourage whenever we can.

those towers are smaller in terms of shear size and volume and the old plaza buildings were not small in themselves 5 world trade had a much larger footprint than any of the new buildings. yes it was 9 floors but they were large enough to be ideal for many financial firms and the main towers the now deceased twin towers did not reach a roof of 1368 with a fancy parapet those did not really exist. due to budget cutting mesures i have to say the new one will not be as good as the original. but we can't change the past we must move on but for me the hardest part is living without them.

Soho Properties chief Sharif El-Gamal just announced that he has tapped a minimalist Italian designer, Piero Lissoni, to design the apartment interiors and amenity spaces at his new condo building, set to rise at 45 Park Place between Church and West Broadway. The building, which is going to be 39 stories tall (or 665 feet) and contain 46 condos, already has an all-star design team in place, with starchitect Jean Nouvel tapped, along with Michel Abboud's SOMA Architects. Early renderings showed a many-headed glass tower, but the final design is yet to be unveiled.

I just hope it doesn't end up looking like Infinity Tower in Dubai where the top looks half assed like they didn't finish it.

Demo on this is just about done, small remnants of the ground floor's all that's left.

Tribeca’s 45 Park Place Site Cleared to Make Way for Slender 660-Foot Skyscraper

Tribeca’s 45 Park Place Site Cleared to Make Way for Slender 660-Foot Skyscraper

The site of a SOMA Architects-designed Tribeca skyscraper has finally been cleared, signaling that groundwork and construction of the slender 38-story tower may soon be before us. The 12,000-square-foot lot at 45 Park Place owned by El Gamal’s SoHo Properties, was formerly three battered pre-war buildings, two of which were a downtown outpost of Burlington Coat Factory.
