Bombardier to overhaul Belgian trams
Wednesday, May 14, 2014

BELGIAN light rail operator De Lijn has awarded Bombardier a contract worth around €6m to carry out heavy overhauls on 20 metre-gauge trams, which are used on the 68km coastal tramway between Knokke and De Panne.

The vehicles are more than 30 years old and Bombardier says that structural revisions will extend their life by 10 years. The trams were originally delivered as two-section vehicles, but were extended between 2001 and 2003 with a low-floor central section.

The first refurbished vehicle is due to return to service in January 2015

De Lijn has also ordered 146 new trams from Antwerp, Ghent and the coast (Kusttram).

62 new trams are for the coast-line.

Do these coastal trams suffer a lot from corrosion? Do they have some special protections to deal with the effects of salt being blast on them all the time?

They do suffer from a lot of corrosion, which is one of the reasons why they are almost constantly being overhauled and modified. They must be some of the most modified tram fleets I know of, completely in the tradition of the old Vicinal Railways.

Last week the north sea coast suffered from strong stormy winds and as a result sand was being blown onto the tracks. This resulted in the suspension of tram service for the weekend with replacement bus service.

Pics taken in De Panne in september 2011 during a hike :

There was something i found a bit silly : there are no ticket vending machines in stations. You must buy them in shops. Since it was sunday...

Some pics I took 4 years ago, travelling with a vintage Kusttram between Ostend and De Haan.

02 Jun 2015

BELGIUM: Flemish public transport operator De Lijn has placed a €97m firm order for a further 40 Bombardier Flexity 2 low-floor trams to replace older vehicles in Gent and Antwerpen. The contract announced by Bombardier on June 2 is an option on a September 2012 deal and takes De Lijn's total order to 88 of the Flexity 2 design, which it has branded ‘Albatros’

Gent is to receive 16 seven-section bidirectional vehicles, 43 m long with a capacity of 378 passengers. Antwerpen will receive 14 seven-section unidirectional cars with a capacity for 380 passengers, and 10 five-section unidirectional cars 31 m long with a capacity of 266 passengers

These beauties won't ride in Bruges. There will be a seperate order for 57 new street cars for the coast tram, which will replace the eighties BN cars. The trams will be 'only' 32 meter long.

So Zeebrugge will welcome new trams in the near future.

CAF preferred for De Lijn trams
01 Nov 2016

BELGIUM: CAF has been selected as preferred bidder to supply 146 low-floor trams for De Lijn, at an estimated cost of €320m, the Vlaanderen transport operator announced on October 31.

De Lijn invited bids last year for its largest ever procurement, covering three builds of 32 m long cars to replace high-floor vehicles dating from 1960-82 and provide extra capacity for growth. It requires 62 unidirectional trams 2 400 mm wide for the coastal line in Oostende, 66 unidirectional cars 2 300 mm wide for Antwerpen and 18 bidirectional trams of 2 300 mm width for Gent. The first vehicles are expected to start running in 2018
