I'm amazed at how fast the building is rising, which is good, but not liking the glass.

Indeed, the glass doesn't look as good as I expected it to be like 1717 Broadway. But it's still a small portion.

Is Manhattan 3 West a response for the extra sq footage lost in one manhattan west from its original height of 1,200 ft?

Not really. The two taller towers are office space while 3 Manhattan West is residential. It came about as a result of a land deal that squared the boundaries of Brookfield's development allowing for an additional tower. Given the tepid office leasing market, the new tower was destined to be residential.

Need to temper that somewhat. Remember that all this construction is the result of prolonged low interest rates. But the fed has now started raising rates and that will put a damper on any future construction, especially if they get North of 2%.

I don't really like the cladding here

Also I think the concrete corners of the 70s lowrise should have remained. It would have more character than to place yet more shiny silver cladding.

I like the view from below, where the recesses give it more texture (in keeping with the "scaly" 10/30 HY cladding). Straight-on is a little meh though.

As for 5MW, keeping the concrete might be nice, but they would at least have to paint it -- that orangey tan contrasts with the glass in the worst way. However, I'm pretty sure that ship has sailed. My main hope for the corners is just that they use something other than the glass they've installed on the sides; wrapping the whole structure in monotonous blue would be a waste of the cool brutalist bones of the building. Some of the renders have looked like brushed steel, which I wouldn't mind at all.
