The reason:
1. a great many of the buildings are really old.
2. most of them are residential buildings only, thus making their architectural design very unimpressive.
3. the few newer ones that do have a nice style (such in buenos aires) are usually low-rise buildings (normally less than 30 floors) compared to buildings in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

I Think that the high-rise buildings in south america are impressive only for third world countries.

maybe your right but i think it's only in south america becouse in mexico there's too many hight-rise bulding like mayor tower, mexico's world trade center or torre latinoamericana and the architecture in mexico is really impressive.
sorry no pics

For now, Santiago seems to be building its first supertall in South America. Will others follow?

Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and some other brasilian cities have a great skylines. Some buildings are a little bit old, but the cities are impressive urban jungles. Then, Buenos Aires and Santiago. Specially Santiago, because of the nice building dessigns. And sorry but that's all. Caracas, Bogota and many cityes have not really many impressive buildings. In North and Central America Mexico City and Panama City have nice things to show the world.

Medellin also has a dense skyline, but not too tall because there is height restriction due to a damn airport.
