DISCUSSION | Possible new Copenhagen highrises

In may last year the Danish State and DSB (National Rail) invited 4 different architechtural firms to be a part of a new large development area in Copenhagen. They all had to make an idea for the masterplan for the new area which will contain both appartments, offices and the national Danish archives.

Let's start with an overview of the area. The area is at the bottom on the right part of the rail tracks:

The 4 different proposals:

1 - Tegnestuen Vandkunsten

Total floorarea: 168.000 m2
Max height: 90 m.

This proposal contains several highrises. Four 18 storey, one 25 storey and one 30 storey building. Some renders:

2 - CUBO Arkitekter A/S

Total floorarea: 143.000 m2
Max height: 47 m.

Next we have the CUBO proposal. I can't find much height information, but it is the typical lowrises with a few taller. Renders:

3- Axel Schultes Architekten

Total floorarea: 230.000 m2
Max height: 71 m.

Now this one is weird, but also interesting (although it would need a lot of work to make really nice). There is several small buildings and one very long one which varies in height up to 20 stories. Renders:

4 - Lundgaard & Tranbjerg Arkitektfirma A/S

Total floorarea: 141.000 m2
Max height: 35-40 m.

Last we have the typical lowrise plan again. I actually think parts of it it looks quite nice, but would like some more height added. The renders:

Here's a diagram of how high the 4 different proposals would be:

More renders and text (in Danish only) can be found in this pdf document from Copenhagen Municipality - The Document

Again this is only masterplan proposals and nothing final, so no reason to get too mad or excited about the details. It is very possible that more than one will be choosen and mixed. We'll probably end up with a bunch of lowrises and maybe one half tall or something. One can only hope though

Tegnestuen Vandkunsten all the way, nothing impressive but come on...we need some decent highrises in Copenhagen.

Don't get too mad or excited ... thanks for the warning, mlm! I might have had some choice words for several of these proposals!

And thanks for bringing us the as usual well documented & comprehensive news on this project!

In view of the above, I shall phrase my reaction VERY cautiously: a tallish tower on the waterfront would be nice!

Interesting - Axel Schultes is the most interesting of course! The other ones are a bit conservative to my mind.

Axel Schultz's proposal is very imprssive, but I dont think it will work. Sure, it looks cool, but not in the very centre of Copenhagen. I'd prefer Vandkunsten, they haver several nice highrises. I also thinks they have a good case, since they are such a respected company.

But, all I really pray for is a highrise, even if its a small one.

It seems that the city will go on with the planning bases on the first project (Vandkunsten) and the fourth (Lundgaard & Tranberg).
They primarely uses the last one as their starting point, and all towers has been cut down to max 12 floors /44 meters. Too bad, but very typical
This is really an area that could take some taller buildings without being in conflict with the historic towers in the old center...

Extremely ugly. It looks like architecture from Eastern Germany from the fifites. Are the Danes aware of the fact that it is 2005?

Next time you should try to actually read what's in the toipic before saying anything like that. I can outline it once again for you: This is only masterplan proposals and nothing final, so no reason to get too mad or excited about the details.

Which means that this is just ideas of how the buildings could be placed, but the designs of the actual buildings are yet to be made.

Are the french people aware that news articles need to be read before commented on?

I think I like Vandkunstens the best allover, even though the Axel Schultes proposal is pretty interesting ( I just think it is to dominating and will probably create a big and maybe a little bit weird contrast to the rest of the city). Vandkunstens proposal has the potential (with some renderings maybe) to make CPH look like the "metropol" it is on the way to be. Just my opinion.

I did read the previous articles, and I think it is a masterplan that should be thrown into the dust bin. It lacks ambition and quality (with the exception maybe of Schultes).
