Luxembourg approves light rail legislation
Wednesday, June 04, 2014

LUXEMBOURG moved a step closer to starting work on its first light rail line on June 4, when the Chamber of Deputies of the Grand Duchy approved legislation authorising construction of the first phase of the Luxtram network.

The initial 6.4km section of the route will link the city's main station and Place de l'Étoile in the city centre with the LuxExpo exhibition centre in the district of Kirchberg, and is expected to open in 2017. Subsequent phases will extend the line south to Cloche d'Or and east to Luxembourg Findel Airport, giving the line a total length of 16km.

The budget for the 14-station initial phase is estimated to be around €230.5m and the Luxembourg national government is expected to meet two thirds of the cost, with the remaining funds being provided by the City of Luxembourg

Soon, Luxembourg will become the smallest country by population that has an urban rail system. That honor currently belongs to Estonia, whose capital Tallinn has a small tram network.

Luxembourg city has around 100 000 inh. That is certainly big enough to support a tram line like that. Good news.

Renders of new Kirchberg-Pfaffenthal (Pont Rouge) station, which will be an interchange between CFT (Luxembourg national railway) and future tram, though change will be via funicular:

Design for funicular, very interesting. In fact, it's so unusual:

Does anyone now how this funicular will be operated. Will it run in an endless loop, a fixed timetable, on-demand or a mix of that? In other words, this thing needs 70 sec to cover the distance but how long will people wait for it to start the journey?

CAF selected for Luxembourg tram order
Monday, May 18, 2015

THE board of Luxtram, the public company responsible for developing the first modern light rail line in Luxembourg, confirmed on May 18 that it has selected CAF as preferred bidder for a contract to supply 21 low-floor LRVs for the project

Seven manufacturers expressed an interest in the contract and three - Alstom, CAF, and Stadler - submitted bids. Luxtram says that CAF achieved the highest score in both the technical and economic elements of the evaluation process and has therefore been selected for the final phase of negotiations

From June the first the city centre bus terminal of Hamilius will be closed within a general project of refurbishment of the area, which includes the underground parking.
Some modification of the network will also take effect.
The web site of the municipal bus service provides information about this project.

Yesterday, 1 June, bus lines have been reorganized.

I made a map showing the new network with the main corridor simplified, some geography and service frequency.

You can see more about the design process here:

Luxembourg tram design revealed
Wednesday, July 01, 2015

ARTIST's impressions of the CAF Urbos low-floor LRV for the first light rail line in Luxembourg were unveiled on July 1 by the country's minister for sustainable development and transport François Bausch and mayor of Luxembourg Mrs Lydie Polfer

Luxtram, the public company responsible for developing the project, selected CAF as preferred bidder in May for a €83m contract to supply 21 45m-long bidirectional vehicles, the first of which will be delivered in early 2017. Each seven-section LRV will have eight double doors on each side and will accommodate up to 450 passengers.

The vehicles have been styled by Lyon-based agency Avant-Première, which has also worked on rolling stock design for the Riyadh metro and the light rail network in Nice

Red bridge 2-year renovation work begins, but it won't close
Thursday, 1 October, 2015 at 08:30

(ADW) The ‘limelight’ of the major bridge renovation work being carried out on Luxembourg City's Pont Adolphe has somewhat overshadowed the fact that the big red bridge or "Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte" as it is officially known, is also due to be upgraded starting next week.

Preparations though, will begin on Thursday evening at 8pm and run until Friday at 6am as new road signs and other measures begin to make an appearance.

From Monday October 5 the work officially begins with the removal of a road surface layer in the middle lane of the “Rout Bréck”
