PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - President Michel Martelly has given land for the construction of a National Olympic Center which was pledged to Haiti during the administration of former President Rene Preval.

...

The center will be located north of Port-au-Prince and will include a total of three football fields, one of which will have a track for the practice of athletics. Gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball, martial arts, tennis court and table tennis, offices and dormitories will also be built.

Architects and engineers delegated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were in Haiti a few months ago. They held working sessions with members of HOC on the construction of this center, to be funded largely by the IOC. The new Olympic center will cost about U.S. $ 29 million and will include a 25,000-seat stadium.

Cite Soleil Stadium

Haiti: Designs Released for $5 Million Football Stadium in Cite Soleil

Project Phoenix has officially unveiled the designs for its planned football stadium in Haiti.

The 12,000-seat, $5 million stadium in Port-au-Prince’s Cite Soleil neighbourhood is the brainchild of Delos’ Morad Fareed and Boby Duval of L’Athletique D’Haiti.

The project was first announced at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative conference.

Phoenix bills itself as a “world-class soccer facility and self-sustaining community for the people of Cite Soleil,” an impoverished area which is a UN red zone due to security issues.

The stadium will additionally house LADH, a youth development programme aiming to provide underprivileged participants with a “safe, clean, supportive environment where they can learn the discipline of sports and the structure of teamwork.”

It will be joined by a football academy, an elementary and middle school and dormitories.

New York-based architect Carlos Zapata designed the stadium.

“Project Phoenix is the next generation of philanthropy,” Fareed, the managing partner of Delos, said in a release. “We are devoted to tangible, on-the-ground results for the people of Cite Soleil, Haiti.”

The design team on the project includes Zapata, who designed the Soldier Field revamp in Chicago, along with engineer William Faschan, stadium designer Gordon E Wood and landscape architect Charles Anderson of Charles Anderson Atelier.

The site of the stadium is being prepared by laying down rubble from the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Groundbreaking is slated for 2013.

I'm actually shocked, I'd never thought to see some quite nice projects in Haiti after 2010.

It seems that they're finally recovering. I wish the best for them.

Great job, el palmesano!
