VANCOUVER | Kitsilano: The city's most livable neighbourhood? (Part I)

The weekend before last (June 1st), I did my first photo tour in over a year. It is a neighbourhood that I have never done a proper tour of, despite being one of the city's more conventionally attractive and higher profile ones, and especially now that I've been living in it for over 9 months it seemed long overdue.

The neighbourhood is Kitsilano, or "Kits" as most locals refer to it. It is southwest of the downtown peninsula and originally developed as a streetcar suburb. The area is mostly comprised of an older stock of SFH, duplexes, row houses, and mid-rise apartments with a scattering of post-war concrete residential towers and a growing number of modern infill mid-rises. Its major commercial anchor streets are West 4th and Broadway which run west-east with lesser but notable stretches along Arbutus, Burrard, Yew and Cornwall, plus smaller pockets throughout.

West 4th was the epicentre of Vancouver's hippie movement in the 60's but the neighbourhood is now better known for Kits Beach, controversial bike lanes, yoga, and "yummy mummies" and is a popular place to live and hangout for UBC students being between campus and downtown. The neighbourhood is also the birthplace of Greenpeace, the 100-Mile Diet, and Lululemon.

I started my walk at 4th and Alma and followed the route below. Part I of the tour ends at Broadway and Arbutus (just after the zig-zaggy part on the map).
