I always liked the idea of designer power plants since power plants are some of the ugliest structures ever built by man.

the only tall structures from my home to university are power plant chimneys, so every day i look at this 200m thing and worry that they one day will demolish it and i have nothing left to see on my train ride

The best power plants are the ones you can't even see.

Plus, there's a delight in the blunt pragmatism of their designs. Especially newer technologies like solar or wind farms.

Ivanpah looks like something out of the future without having a single artistic element in its construction.

Coal plants should be ugly because coal power itself is ugly. If we must have them for economic reasons, we should hide them away and wait until they are inevitably replaces by green, inherently beautiful sources of energy.

They are expected to reach the height of 1km, catching up with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture-designed Kingdom Tower in Jeddah; they would be the tallest pair of towers in the world.

Inspired by the symbol of the Chinese Phoenix, which combines male and female principles in perfect balance, the architects designed two interdependent towers. The “male” one (Feng) feeds the “female” (Huang) with renewable energy and together they act as a beacon of sustainability in the area.

The Phoenix Towers are outfitted with wind turbines, solar panels, thermal chimneys and rainwater harvesting systems and they will act as an “environmental catalyst” to re-invigorate the city of Wuhan."

i dont like it. it's very terrible and strange.

Yeah, these won't be built, and I'm not unhappy about that.

Eco-porn xD; how fitting.

Anyways, I have some confidence that this would likely be built, if only because the Chinese government wants to have the biggest rod in the world. It's basically just them trying to beat the Kingdom Tower.

New article on our flip board (link) states several new information:

- Project cost is £1.2 billion
- planned to start this year, finished by 2018
- the taller tower has 100 floors of office residential and retail
- smaller huang tower will be 1km tall making the taller tower over 1200m probably

If this project is really happening it will be a giant slap on the face for Kingdom Tower!

With 100 floors it is likely it features more empty space than floors rendering it a tower, the smaller tower doesn't have any floors other than garden and stuff, so kingdom tower will still be the tallest building. But yes not getting tallest structure title would be a slap in the face anyways. However this project is as unlikely as it is ambitious i think.

This was by far the greatest design for a 1km tower (and not only):

Oh yeah totally forgot about this one!! I absolutely agree but if we are gonna talk about forgotten proposals I can without a doubt crown Dubai City Tower as the awesomest design a supermegatall could ever have!! actually as impossible as it might sound, I am still hoping this tower would really happen in Dubai

I loved the old Al Burj design as well as the new as Nakheel tower. Too bad the project has been cancelled.
