I like the original design a lot better. It was slimmer, had a crown, and had more horizontal lines. The new version just looks like the old version's fat cousin. I really hope they'll eventually go back to some of the original design features.

Earlier version is on the left. I think it's fantastic either way. Some of the apparent differences might be from the viewing angle, or the way the renders were done.

I gotta say, I kind of agree with you. Although for me it's not a big enough difference to downgrade the new version, it's still one of the best new towers in the city (my 3rd best).
The previous version, however was a bit more striking IMO.

I actually like the new version a lot more. I think the elimination of some of the horizontal elements make the tower more striking, the crown looks less weird, and the bronze.... Just wow.... The bronze... Also, I think the increased width is just due to a slight change of viewing angles.

Also JDS is playing their cards right shifting over to rentals instead of condos. It increases the chances of this building getting built

NYC is crazy. Just when you though nothing could beat Tower Verre - two new towers from SHoP apperead which are totally what most of architecture geeks would not even dare dream of.

I actually love the design. It could easily be the most beautiful building I ever seen.

These are my thoughts too. Setbacks are awesome, but I really like when there's at least one unbroken vertical element (take the CTF Guangzhou, which looks awesome not least because of that insanely tall, unbroken pinstripey curtain wall.)

And I think the new crown is a big improvement. The old lattices were cool, but I think the chevron design bordered on being a little kitschy. This nest of spires is all class.

Fresh angle, from the Yimbygram:

Edit: From Skylimitone's post, it seems maybe some of you can't see the image? It's displaying for me on my desktop and on the SSC app, so if you can't see it, just follow the link to NewYorkYimby's Instagram account (and give them a follow while you're at it)

The design of the Steinway Tower and this building are both excellent. However, the massing of this tower makes it the best design proposed for NYC at the moment. Perhaps the best design proposed currently anywhere in the world.

No doubt BIG is a talented architect but his work with supertalls is sub par. I agree with tallestkid, Bjarke should take inspiration from SHoP. His proposal for "the Spiral" looks empty and cold with awkward proportions and 2WTC(enough said). In contrast to this inviting, detailed and excellently proportioned tower. BIG certainly knows how to look towards the future but to me he misses to more important piece of looking at the past.
