Their complaining always seem short sighted and as if they wanna conserve the city as a museum. I also think a lot of the complaining is simply done to avoid all the noise that comes with new development. I especially find the NIMBYism going on in midtown Manhattan to be stupid and senseless.

Nimby's are everywhere. I consider them as a plague.
Here in Rotterdam (Netherlands), a building of a mere 70 m is delayed for years due to some nimby's who claim that their dogs must shit on that plot of land...

Sometimes I am jealous at countries like China, where nimby's are just kicked out of their houses by the police, and their houses are demolished 5 minutes after that.
Not very nice either, but it makes decision-making a lot easier and quicker.

Our Western democratic systems are just too overregulated.

I don´t wanna have such a system in the west ever. But I think that we in the west are overregulated and that too many people who have no clue whatsoever get to have a say in stuff they understand nothing about. It makes many things slow, costly and inefficient and progress a lot harder to acchieve.

With projects like this one, I have no clue why anyone should have the right to say what Stern does on HIS property that he has bought with MILLIONS of dollars.

I feel like the biggest underlying factor of NIMBYIsm is selfishness and a huge fear of change.

It's called democracy. But you don't have to endorse it.

Is this demo or u/c? That structure covered in the black tarpaulin looks like it needs to come down before this can go up.

It's in demo. If you look closely you can see fallen beams and piles of rubble.

This neo-gothic postmodern cathedral like tower should make quite an impresion on natives used to decades of mediocre and shitty buildings in Brooklyn (like the Brooklyner, Avalon, etc). The material quality will make or break this one though. It could end up kitchy looking if that is not up to par.

I'm a Brooklyn native and I never could've possibly imagined we'd get something like this in terms of architecture and size. I never even thought we'd ever get a big skyline either. I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that we are getting a building in Brooklyn taller than the Chrysler
This is going to be a game changer for sure. BK does have gorgeous architecture on the street level however.

I'm so impatient for this one to start rising. I can't wait to see how the general public here in Brooklyn reacts to this one. I'm sure almost nobody sees this coming! Outside of people on here that keep up with this stuff, obviously.

Here's an article I found from a few weeks ago that goes over the partial demo and preservation work of the Dime Savings Bank building

http://www.brownstoner.com/developme...trit-jds-shop/

The article includes this helpful image via SHoP architects which shows what has been demolished so far and what still remains:

Here are a few I took today 11/9 by slipping my cell phone through the cracks

Doesn’t seem like anything so substantial but still it was overdue for an update

Why can't you resize those? They are massive on my 1080p monitor.

I'm not sure how to on mobile. Apologies, I'm just trying to contribute in any way I can. I don't have a camera or a computer.
Thank you Streetscapeer
