Anyway, I'm interested to see how this will turn out. It will be a game changer for Chicago!
LSE usually isn't considered part of the loop. Either way the parking makes sense this building's footprint is surrounded on all sides up to about 3-4 stories with no opportunity for windows (Wacker drive to the north has 3 full above ground levels of roadway) and the building will have basically direct access to Lake Shore Drive and a luxury hotel component.

Chinese developer plans tower designed by Jeanne Gang of Aqua fame
By Kathy Bergen

Quote:
Chicago officials are expected to announce this week that a Chinese developer is moving ahead with plans for an 89-story riverfront residential and hotel tower, to be designed by Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, according to sources close to the deal.

Beijing-based Wanda Group reportedly plans to invest $900 million in the project, which is likely to house an ultra-luxurious hotel, insiders say. For Chicagoans, it is the splashiest of deals being highlighted this week as U.S.-China trade talks get started here.

That Studio Gang-Designed Supertall Just Got Way More Real

Quote:
Back in July, Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group announced via a simple press release their intentions to build a 1,000+ foot supertall tower in Lakeshore East. However, nobody in the United States, let alone in Chicago, could say a word about the project on the record, so despite having a name, a design render, and pretty solid evidence of who designed it, the Wanda tower had to remain an unconfirmed rumor. That changes today, however, as the Chicago Tribune has reported that the tower is indeed a reality and confirms that local starchitect Jeanne Gang is indeed the designer behind it.

Technically, the Tribune only reports that the building will be announced later this week, but for a project that's only been spoken about in assumptions and hunches, this is a major confirmation that the 89 floor skyscraper isn't just a fantasy. According to the Tribune, the entire cost of the three-tower structure is unknown, but Wanda will be kicking in $900 million to help cover it. With the current design at 1,148 feet, this tower would become the third tallest in Chicago, and with its prominent location along the main branch of the river and so near the lakefront the building would likely become an iconic part of our city's skyline, as evidenced in these renderings we published showing how the building would be visible throughout town.

The two different cladding shades could make it look really cheap

The color is much better in that last render. It's still pretty ugly though.

Have they flipped the orientation? The levels ascended to the left in the first image, but to the right in the next.

Well it would certainly have very dramatic interiors, but boy... I'm normally a fan of Studio Gang's designs, but this tower just doesn't work for me.

No needle buildings in Chicago, where do they always get these huge plots in the middle of the city?

There are lots of reasons for that.

The Chicago Fire - with a huge population and economy already in place and a lot of open land it was easy to build big buildings after the chicago fire. which means big footprints when those buildings are replaced.

Geography - Chicago's center isn't trapped on an island like in Manhattan. Most pictures of Chicago show the central business district and part of river north but there are miles of coast with skyscrapers north and south of the CBD and less density further inland.

Development friendly - Chicago has less barriers to the accumulation of land and development of real estate.

Industrial past - a lot of develpment in Chicago happens on land that was previously used for factories or warehouses.

This is a design that will look miles better once built. Jeanne Gang/Wanda will make sure of that - nothing but the best materials will be used. I love it! I love its innovation, massing and dominance - all Chicago traits. This is the perfect tower for an architecturally forward thinking city. This will be a great 21st century icon for Chicago.

Btw, I am also a big fan of the new orientation of the towers - it now draws the eye into the city.

Yes, I prefer a grey shade instead of blue as well. I wouldn't call it ugly though.
