How are the 787's doing with respect to their weight targets?

According to this article:
http://www.aspireaviation.com/2013/0...me-true-again/

The LN103 was the 1st 787-8 to meet the original weight targets, so about 18 787 came out of assembly without being overweight.

The LN126, the first 787-9 is actually already reported as being lighter then it's target rate, that's very positive. Also for the 787-8 that will get some of the weight savings from the 787-9 when that goes into regular production.

that's very interesting—and great—to hear that the 787-9 is coming out with a lighter than targeted weight... How could that happen even though the two may have similar materials used but with one having a longer fuselage?

With the 787-9 being bigger it also has a higher target weight of course.

It's more that there will be additional weight savings. There will be for example some changes to the inner structure of the 787-9 wings that will reduce the weight even though the wings of both types have the same size. And there are more of those changes that will be added to the 787-8 after the 787-9 is certified.

Being the 2nd model of the 787-9 just has the advantage that it can incorporate the weight savings of the 787-8 plus the new saving that can be more easily added and tested in a completely new type.

Jon Ostrower from The Wall Street Journal tweets:

Quote:
BREAKING WSJ: Boeing 787-10 launch imminent for #PAS13; United, Air Lease, Singapore Airlines, British Airways seen as launch customers.
https://twitter.com/jonostrower/stat...77009481592832

Okay, the launch at Paris is not really shocking news but the launch customers are interesting. We already knew about SA, and BA is also expected with their recent announcement of an order for 18 787s. Air Lease Corporation (ALC) was one of the leasing companies that has been very vocal about the 787-10, so that's not a real surprise but it's good to see them mentioned in this way. Currently they only have 12 787-9s on order, I could see that number grow significantly. United is an airline I did not suspect yet, but they still have 50 options. Their current orders do cover all the 767s, so there will be 777-200s to be replaced where the 787-10 will do the job perfectly.

Reuters has a story on how a production increase to 14 787s per month in 2015 could be very profitable.
Quote:
Boeing Seen Reaping $6 Billion a Year on 787 Output Boost

Boeing Co. (BA), rebounding from the 787 Dreamliner’s three-month grounding, is moving closer to a further production increase that would reward investors by freeing up billions of dollars for dividends and buybacks.

While the planemaker isn’t discussing goals beyond 2013, Boeing will need a faster rate to fill more than 800 Dreamliner orders and make room for a stretched version of the jet by 2020. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg project the pace will reach 14 a month as soon as 2015, up from Boeing’s target of 10 by year-end.
full article:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...put-boost.html

It's likely that Boeing will announce a rate increase next week together with the launch of the 787-10.

ZA243 VT-ANO for Air India flew to FTW for painting:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/B...430Z/KCHS/KFTW

so ZA384 B-2733 for China Southern was painted, and will return to KCHS soon.

ZA431 for Hainan and ZA241 for Air India has been flying few times in last days, probably customer/familiarization flights. Deliveries can occur soon.

And the ZA005 is flying to La Paz in Bolivia, probably to do some high altitude tests with the GE engines.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE5

And the ZA004 is returning to Boeing Field after a short Hawaii trip.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE4

And Bloomberg is continuing the order speculations with the new that Qatar will place an top-up order in Paris.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...aris-push.html

The question is if it will be the -9 or the -10, or both of course.

And according to someone on Airliners.net who apparently works for Air Canada or has some inside connections that if they firm up their remaining 23 options it will only be the 787-10. Another sign that the biggest subtype of the 787 will become very popular.

Looks like UA will order a lot of 787s to augment its domestic services and add even more international routes from its hubs. Hopefully, SFO will get to see quite a lot of those Dreamliners, not just for maintenance, but also for regular service... and I hope that it will replace its older B757s and B763s over time.

After WSJ a couple of days ago it's now also Bloomberg that is reporting that United will order the 787-10.

Quote:
United Said to Shift to Biggest Dreamliner 787, A350 Jets

United Airlines (UAL) is in talks to buy the largest versions of Boeing Co. (BA)’s 787 Dreamliner and Airbus SAS’s A350, making it the first U.S. carrier to fly the new long-haul jets, people familiar with the matter said.

The carrier will modify a 2009 order to take 25 wide-body A350-1000s instead of the smaller -900 variant as once planned, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. United also will convert options for a couple dozen A350s and Dreamliners into firm orders, with the Boeing jets being the new 787-10X model, the people said.
full article:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...a350-1000.html

For the 787 program Boeing will be pleased that United will chose the 787-10 over the A350-900. For the 777X program they will be less pleased as a conversion of the A350-900 to the -1000 could mean that they won't be interested in the 777X any more as a 747-400 replacement.

Here's the video of the ANA 787-8 completing its first revenue flight from Tokyo Haneda to Toyama on 15 June 2013. Note the rainy conditions due to the start of the rainy season in Japan:
