There's quite some test flight activity for a Sunday. We should see more the next couple of days for the end of the month delivery rush.

Boeing has said nothing on the issue, they actually only posted a link to the 1st official report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) that really only said that it wasn't the batteries that caused the fire. The rumored causes came from the press and not from Boeing, Ethiopian or the authorities in London.

I'm thinking the coffee machine in question wasn't in the passenger compartment. The burned area on the upper fuselage is directly over the cabin crew rest area. My guess is that whatever ignited the fire happened there.

Does anyone have any confirmation of this coffee maker rumor?

Boeing might want people to believe that, but Ethiopian first statement said it was the air conditioner system, we will see.

Either case, even if it were the coffee machine, oh dear... I'm not sure I want to fly on a plane which is set on flames due to a coffee machine.

LN39 ZA260 ET-AOO finally in the air:

This frame was first built for Ethiopian, put into storage after final assembly, for over one year.

In position 3 in 40-26, June 2nd 2011:

In storage, early September 2012:

Rolled to EMC in late September 2012, disappeared for over 4 months long change incorporation/re-work:

Finally, in February 2013 rolled out to Fuel Dock and later into paint hangar in Everett.

In April 2013, already painted moved to EMC again, for Battery Fix:

After fix installation, moved to flightline. Delivery set to occur this month:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
And next interesting movement today.
LN36 ZA381 B-2726 just emerged from paint hangar, on move to EMC again. All inside bays are full, so probably for last touches or/and battery fix. The same situation as ET-AOO in February.

Really busy day in PAE. Maybe Matt Cawby or/and Moonm took and will upload photos of all these events.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know this is LN36 and not LN43? Because LN43 was moved from the EMC to the flightline last month, and she could have been moved again.

/edit

Nevermind, I found the answer by myself:

Some 787s will live half of their life in EMC.

Don't prejudge. Terrible teens needs about 12 months to complete change incorporation, but much longer life is ahead, 20-30 years of service. It will be glad to see them delivered and flying in commercial service. Maybe in 2015 the sad sight of 787s mothballed with concrete blocks instead engines will disappear from PAE.

8 still stored, 8 under rework. LN20 ZA175 JA821J should be out soon, and next one will take her place. I think Boeing will sell ZA004 and ZA005 as BBJ too, ZA006 should be back to PAE this year.

Jon Ostrower from WSJ tweets that the Wall Street Journal has some info that the investigation into the fire is focusing on the Emergency Locator Transmitter.

This is a part of the plane that is pretty standard, the model used on the 787 is also used used on other planes from different manufactures. But no official confirmation yet, it's all in rumor territory right now. The investigation is expected to last several days, since there was no press update today there was also no new official news.

So how many more deliveries in July?

01. LN95 ZA384 B-2733 China Southern [07/2/2013]
02. LN76 ZA431 B-2722 Hainan [07/4/2013]

03. LN39 ZA260 ET-AOO Ethiopian [07/--/2013]
04. LN88 ZA274 SP-LRE LOT [07/--/2013]
05. LN103 ZA466 A7-BCE Qatar [07/--/2013]
06. LN105 ZA186 JA832J JAL [07/--/2013]
07. LN116 ZA468 A7-BCG Qatar [07/--/2013]
08. LN117 ZA291 N29907 United [07/--/2013]

Possibly, but not confirmed:
LN81 ZA433 B-2723 [email protected]
LN85 ZA434 B-2730 [email protected]
LN90 ZA242 VT-ANN Air India
LN91 ZA243 VT-ANO Air [email protected]
LN100 ZA385 B-2736 China [email protected]

Boeing better hope it's the standard locator, meaning nothing wrong with the plane design itself.

Honeywell which manufactures the beacon has joined the investigation.

The beacon features a non-rechargable battery which in the past has been known to catch fire if charging is attempted, could possibly be an electrical fault or short in the 787 distribution grid again, sending power where its not supposed to.

When the battery is non-rechargable why would it be connected to the internal electricity distribution grid???
I understand it in that way that when the battery of the beacon is low on energy it is replaced by a new one.
