Misconnection during maintence or debris causing a short, while self powered with a 10 year battery the beacon is wired into the aircrafts maintence, warning systems, cockpit display and aerial. The beacon has been in service since 2006 and never had an incident before now.

Japanese airlines have completed an unprompted visual inspection of the area to look for such instances or heat damage. Reportedly the AAIB is preparing to issue an instruction for the beacons to be temporarily removed as their not neccesary for certified flight and they suspect the battery in the beacon was responsible for the incident.

The 1st 787-9 should roll out of the factory in about 30 minutes.

"ZB001, the first 787-9, should be outside around 11 PM PT"
https://twitter.com/jonostrower/stat...93391607324672

It was loaded into assembly on 05/30, so it only took about one and a half month to complete it. That's not that much longer then the time the 787-8s currently spend on the assembly line. Which is a big contrast with the first 787-8 prototypes that took a lot longer, only to roll-out with lots of work still needed to be done. The 787-9 will also spend some time on the flight line before it's 1st flight, but not as long as the 1st -8 prototype.

Confirmed fire was in the Beacons battery, caused by either overheating or a short circuit, AAIB reccomends all Dreamliners have their beacons rendered inert (battery removed) and that their should be a wider examination of Lithium batteries in ELT beacons on all models of aircraft due to the fire being unextinguishable by conventional methods (foam) noting that if it had occured in the air crew would have been unable to tackle it.

http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/...87__et_aop.cfm

Also says plane was on umbilicals to external power supply at time of incident but power flow wasnt enabled, the beacon battery was the only energy source on the plane with enough energy to start a fire.

It's not an essential part of the plane, aircraft are allowed to fly without an ELT.

And if there's would be a grounding it would affect all airplanes with the same device, not just the 787. Honeywell has produced about 6,000 of this type of ELT, and there's no agency that will order the grounding of thousands of aircraft because the economic effect would simply be too big.

Either way, the results show that this incident was a text book case of Murphy's Law. It could have happened on any type of aircraft, but faith chose the 787, again.

Indeed. The biggest problem with 787s' backlog lie in Chinese carriers and Air India.
4 planes for Air India and 9 for Chinese are sitting in PAE and CHS, taking places over airports.

JAL won't take any chance and divert, the fuel pump is an extremely essential part so if there's an indication that something is wrong they will return.
