Can't Air India stop in FRA pick up passengers and continue to fly to India. Instead of flying an empty plane and wasting fuel and missing the opportunity to make money on a flight to India. Air India has an flight to FRA from India on an 787? That is what I would do instead of wasting fuel for and empty flight if I was an CEO of an airline.

It would have to be an extra flight, otherwise the regular flight from India to Frankfurt would have to go back empty instead of the new plane. And with an extra flight you need to actually sell the seats to make it worthwhile, twice as many as on a normal day. The staff will also have to be flown in from India. It's not as simple as it might look. Although it has been done. Ethiopian flew their 1st 787 from Washington State to Washington DC to operate it's 1st commercial flight to Ethiopia.

And delivery flights also take cargo, even if the cargo is just spare parts for the plane itself it still saves the airline the regular cargo fees when they are flown in the normal way.

Runway closure shouldn't be an issue much longer. Now if we can just get the Chinese carriers to accept delivery of their planes! :-)

A video on RB's Dreamliner on the Brunei Times youtube channel. Two out of the five RB's 787 can be seen here and one is scheduled for delivery by the end of September 2013.

Its is not even out of the paint shop yet. Getting close though. Any day now. Then they have to do all the ground testing. Hopefully they will spend the time getting everything right before flying the bird so they don't spend five years before delivering the first 787-9. In summary not for a couple of months yet.

LOT is looking into converting its final two 787 orders to the 787-9.
In total LOT would have 6x787-8/2x787-9 in its fleet.
