I wouldn't be surprised if ANA will get their 1st 787-9 very shortly after the 1st delivery to Air New Zealand, it could be a matter of days. ANA did place the launch order for the 787-9 after-all, which is acknowledged by the order of the tails that are painted on the fuselage of 1st prototype.

It also shows that the 787-9 prototypes are already very similar to the production 787-9s. It won't be a problem like for the 787-8 prototypes to modify them into deliverable planes for actual airlines. Which will probably happen with all of them unless Boeing wants to keep 1 for further tests.

The first two 787-9 prototypes will be delivered to NZ in September or October 2014 as ZK-NZC and ZK-NZD. It will take a few months to refurbish them first (remember, they don't have a cabin and removing the test equipment takes time). The third prototype, ZB021, is rumored to end up as VIP airplane for Mexico. NZ first delivery will be ZK-NZE (line number unknown for the moment).

LN146 will have light test equipment on-board thus will need a little bit refurbishment first. Boeing used two 787-8 production frames for certification (the FAA requires at least one production frame for final certification), one of them was LN34 and I believe it took a month to refurbish it.

So we will see the first 787 engine type change. NZ selected RR engines, ZB002 has got GEnx engines.

That's why I wouldn't be surprised that at the end of the day the 1st and the 3rd prototype will go to Air New Zealand and the 2nd as a BBJ to AeroMexico for the Mexican government.

Funny because I think I read something like that somewhere.

Qatar airways Boeing 787 dreamliner debuted today at CPH on the Copenhagen-Doha route

Its the first dreamliner in service but Norwegian had their Dreamliner on some crew training flights with passengers on the Copenhagen-Oslo route in the start of August.

CPH´s facebook page posted these pictures.

And by the way, Japan Airlines also debuted its B787 service yesterday to San Francisco, replacing the B777-200ER on its HND–SFO route.

Why do airlines buy test aircraft? Do they come incredibly cheap or free?

Are you referring to the very first models built, or ie for planes like the one LOT "offered" to test the battery modification. The latter certainly offered some short of discount to the airline, while the maker didn't had to reserve one more test aircraft.

I then wonder if the B787 can be used to restart BA's service to Manila, given that the airline is keen on expanding its network further to markets like Indonesia and the Philippines?

I sincerely hope so. Though, previously it operated as a HKG tag on and this could happen again. With the introduction of the W13/14 schedule, BA has retimed both of its HKG flights. The first (BA025) switches to A380 but the second (BA027), a 77E, sits at HKG from 16:45 until 23:45, this is more than enough time to get to MNL and back. Having said that, I do think that a three class 787-8 would be absolutely ideal in the longer term.

But it's a classic case of misinformation. Ethiopian has taken delivery of 5 dreamliners and has 8 more to be delivered (5 from direct orders, 3 from a leasing deal).

The actual news is that even though the fire in the beacon that has grounded one of the 787s they are still very happy with the dreamliner and that they will be ordering more in the future. But that the waiting time (the first new delivery slots are in 2018) is just too long right now.

Actually, the 8 are the remaining 787 to be delivered and ET CEO actually mentioned that they will place orders for more 787's in the future. Right now their next focus is the delivery of their A350's beginning 2016.

Doubt BA will do the additional tag-on HKG-MNL, which is heavily served by low-cost and traditional carriers. Would cannibalize their yields if they try to push an A380 or 747 with so many seats on this housemaid express that is extremely price-conscious.
