Wow. It's great to hear that the 787-9 is in flight test mode now. So has the Royal Brunei first flight happen yet. If not when will it's first flight be. So we had Jetstar, 787-9 and the CS1000 series (off topic, I know) first flight this week too.

Boeing Flies First 787-9 Dreamliner

-Newest member of efficient 787 family touches down after 5-hour-plus inaugural flight
-787-9 flight-test fleet production on track; flight testing proceeding on schedule

SEATTLE, Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing [NYSE: BA] 787-9 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time today, beginning a comprehensive flight-test program leading to certification and delivery in mid-2014.

With its distinctive new Boeing livery, the newest member of the efficient 787 family completed a 5-hour, 16-minute flight, taking off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., at 11:02 a.m. local time and landing at 4:18 p.m. at Seattle's Boeing Field.

"Today's first flight marks a significant milestone for our team, including our partners," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Conner. "We are tremendously proud to have our customers fly the 787-9 and look forward to delivery of the first airplane to Air New Zealand next year."

During today's flight, 787-9 Senior Project Pilot Mike Bryan and 787 Chief Pilot Randy Neville departed to the north, reaching an altitude of 20,400 feet (6,218 meters) and an airspeed of 250 knots, or about 288 miles (463 kilometers) per hour, customary for a first flight. While Capts. Bryan and Neville tested the airplane's systems and structures, onboard equipment transmitted real-time data to a flight-test team on the ground in Seattle.

"We accomplished a lot in this flight, and it went really well," said Bryan. "The 787-9 is a great jet and we wanted to just keep on flying."

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the first 787-9 will be joined in flight test by two additional airplanes, one of which will feature General Electric GEnx engines. Those airplanes are in the final stages of assembly in Boeing's Everett factory. Over the coming months, the fleet will be subjected to a variety of tests and conditions to demonstrate the safety and reliability of the airplane's design.

The 787-9 will complement and extend the 787 family, offering airlines the ability to grow routes first opened with the 787-8. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will carry 40 more passengers an additional 300 nautical miles (555 kilometers), with the same exceptional environmental performance — 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes. The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering the features passengers prefer such as large, dimmable windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Boeing is on track to deliver the 787-9 to launch customer Air New Zealand in mid-2014. Twenty-five customers from around the world have ordered 388 787-9s, accounting for 40 percent of all 787 orders.

ALC has firmed up their new 787-9 and 787-10 order that was announced at the Paris Air Show.

Quote:
Boeing, ALC Finalize Order for 30 787-10 and 3 787-9 Dreamliners

SEATTLE, Sept. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Air Lease Corporation (ALC) announced today that they have completed an order for 30 787-10 and three 787-9 Dreamliners. The order, valued at $9.4 billion at list prices, fulfills the commitment originally announced during the 2013 Paris Air Show in June.

"We are thrilled to be adding 787-10s and additional 787-9s to our portfolio," said ALC Chairman and CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy. "The performance characteristics of the 787-10 will build on the 787 family's success in the marketplace by providing the ideal size, capabilities and economical operating costs for medium to long-haul markets."

The new 787-10, launched in June 2013, will extend and complement the Dreamliner family, carrying 300 to 330 passengers up to 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 km), while providing 25 percent more fuel efficiency than airplanes of its size today and more than 10 percent better than anything being offered by the competition for the future. The 787-9 completed its first flight this week and is scheduled for first delivery in mid 2014.

"ALC is an ideal partner to help establish the 787-10 in the airplane leasing market," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. "The ALC team has an excellent understanding of its airline customers' requirements and a successful track record placing Boeing airplanes that meet those needs."

This order for 787-9s and 787-10s adds to the more than 180 Boeing airplanes that ALC already has on order including Next-Generation 737-800s, 737 MAX 8s and 9s, 777-300ERs and 787-9s. The 787-10, which will deliver in 2018, has 102 orders and commitments from five customers.
Boeing press release:
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/...tF=View+Report

The total number of firm orders for the 787 is now 969, with 80 for the 787-10. The net total for 2013 is 121, the highest number of net orders for the 787 since 2007.

So only 31 more to 1000 orders. Maybe will happen even this year.

Next week we should see the firming up of the 18 orders for British Airways after the IAG shareholders meeting. Then it's just 13 left, if Gecas firms their 787-10 before the end of the year it will be just 3 to the reach the 1.000, that should be doable.

The VH-VKA Jetstar made it's 2nd flight yesterday.

Both firmed orders are now on the orders and deliveries page:
http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm

That brings the net order total for 2013 to 131.

I wonder which other orders (apart from BA) we will see this year, especially for the 787-10.

I don't know why, but to me the -9 seems more proportionate than the -8. Looks like two people grabbed two ends of a -8 and pulled really hard.
That said, those that want to place orders, the line starts here. Single file please!

The ZB001 is scheduled for it's 2nd flight today:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/BOE1

I think the upcoming test flights of the 787-9 and the fact that ZA005 N787FT is now on the flightline at Everett is related. It might even be that the flight testing days for the 5th 787-8 prototype are now officially over. I wonder what they will do with it now, will it go into storage, or will it take a place at the modification center straight away for a conversion into a BBJ. We should know soon enough.

ZA006 is still in San Antonio undergoing refurbishment, since may 2012. This is proof that re-work these test frames will take much time. I dont think Boeing will move it to Everett EMC, but I believe ZA004&ZA005 will fly to San Antonio for re-work. EMC is busy with Transaero and Air India's frames and there is still 8 frames in storage around PAE. These can't fly, so ferry 2 remaining test frames to San Antonio will be rather better idea.

LN36 ZA381 B-2726 for China Southern just took off in the air for first time.
This is second frame built for China Southern. Rolled from FAL straight to storage in Kilo North in late April (or early May) 2011.

Without paint, just mothballed has been waiting for better times. In mid-November 2012, after nearly 19 months of storage, moved to EMC for re-work. Moved inside EMC disappeared for 7 months.

Moved outside EMC in June 2013.

Next moved to paint hangar for special China Southern 787s livery. Emerged in paint on 17th July 2013, and moved again to EMC for last works. Appeared on the fligtline in August 2013:

Now, 19th September 2013 finally in the air, after 2 years and 5 months since rollout from FAL.

Thomson Airways add new fourth Boeing 787 Dreamliner route from Glasgow
13 August 2013

Thomson Airways have confirmed they will operate the new state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on direct flights from Glasgow Airport to the Dominican Republic next summer.

The weekly service to Punta Cana on the Caribbean island will take to the skies on 01 May 2014 and will run throughout the summer season, operating every Thursday.

The new route is part of Thomson Airways recent expansion from Glasgow Airport and Punta Cana will be the airlines third route from the airport to be operated by the revolutionary Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The aircraft’s first ever transatlantic flight departed Glasgow Airport for Cancun on 08 July and has since proved very popular with passengers. Almost 300 passengers flew on the inaugural flight and 97% rated their experience as 'excellent' or 'good.'

Paul Cooper, airport negotiations manager for Thomson and First Choice, said: “Adding the extra capacity and the introduction of the Thomson 787 Dreamliner demonstrates the importance of Glasgow Airport and the local area to our business, and following the success of similar routes from the airport, we know that the demand is there.

“Expanding access to our portfolio of destinations and hotels is a key part of our overall strategy. We hope that this move will enhance the holiday experience for our customers and that they are as excited as we are about the new 787 Dreamliner.”

Francois Bourienne, commercial director at Glasgow Airport, said: “This is yet more good news from Thomson and First Choice. It was an honour to have been the first UK airport to wave off the Dreamliner on its inaugural transatlantic passenger flight and the decision to add Punta Cana is a clear demonstration of the tour operator’s commitment to the Glasgow market.”

Local passengers will now have access to some of Thomson and First Choice’s most popular hotels including the brand new for summer 2014 Memories SplashWorld Resort, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic which features a spa and fitness centre as well as an onsite waterpark with multi-lane slide, stomach-plummeting black hole and a pool full of mini-waterslides for the younger ones.

Thomson flights and holidays from Glasgow can be booked now at thomson.co.uk.
