When will United paint their 787's without the wavy livery? I hope they don't plan to keep the wavy livery on the 787's permanently.

Boeing reports wing cracks on Dreamliners

Boeing's Dreamliner has hit another snag.

"Hairline cracks" were found on the wings of some jets still in production, the company said Friday.

The aerospace company is inspecting the 40 planes it says may be affected. It will take between one and two weeks to address the issue, wrote spokesman Marc Birtel in an email. He said the company is confident that the problem does not exist for any planes currently in service.

Boeing was notified by its supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries that a change in its manufacturing process may have led to the cracks. Mitsubishi did not immediately return a call for comment.

The wing cracks are only the most recent problem Boeing has faced with its 787 Dreamliner, a lightweight wide-body jet that uses composite materials instead of aluminum to be more fuel efficient than other similar planes.

The Dreamliners were grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration in January 2013 due to a fire risk associated with the plane's batteries. The problem was fixed, but an empty Dreamliner jet caught fire last July at Heathrow's airport due to a problem with an emergency beacon.

Despite those problems, there is still consumer demand for the jet and Boeing ramped up production throughout last year.

The company said there may be some immediate delays in deliveries, but it does not expect the recently discovered wing cracks to impact deliveries planned to be made throughout the rest of 2014.

The lack of deliveries in February and the slowdown in production might not just be caused by the traveled work needed after assembly from the not fully completed mid sections that come from Charleston. Boeing has announced that a change of the manufacturing process of the wings at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has caused a problem with hairline cracks in over 40 wing sets.

Quote:
Wall Street Journal: Undelivered 787 to be inspected for wing cracks

The Wall Street Journal's Jon Ostrower reported today that a change in the manufacturing process in the Mitsubishi built wings for the 787 may cause hairline cracks to develop.

This is another potential issue in a whole list of issues dating back to 2007 that have plagued the 787. Jon identified the 787s affected as aircraft LN 151 to LN 193 inclusive. Boeing said that some of the 43 aircraft have cracks and some do not while others have yet to be inspected. According to the database that I have compiled, most of the aircraft have been built or are under going final assembly. Some of the wings that are still in Japan are assigned to the later line numbers.
http://nyc787.blogspot.com/2014/03/w...ed-787-to.html

Search "Boeing to Inspect Wings of Undelivered Dreamliners for Cracks" on Google to see the original article.

The currently latest built delivery is LN149, the last one that rolled out was the LN169. There are 17 already completed but undelivered 787s that have been affected by this issue. There are currently 14 787 in final assembly and 12 787s that will go in assembly in the next 2 months that will be affected.

An aviation reporter from the Seattle area has tweeted this message.

"Learning that hairline cracks in 787 wings are not in the composite structure, but in aluminum piece that appears easy to replace."
https://twitter.com/GlennFarley/stat...74347822268417

This means that no wings will have to be completely replaced. But "easy to replace" probably doesn't mean that it's a quick job. It has already caused a temporary reduction of the production rate, and a mandatory trip to the EMC after roll out.

Luckily Boeing has enough experience with dealing with a big delivery backlog on the flight line. I fully expect that they will still keep the delivery target of 110 this year.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/A...400Z/KCHS/VIDP

Probably 4 more deliveries from Charleston this month: ZA469, ZA470, ZA471 for Qatar and ZA294 for United.

And LN28 ZA232 VT-ANC is on the flightline again. I hope finally for flight testing and delivery:

They probably are the early builds for ANA, JAL, Hanian and other first customers that rejected the early built 787s.

Hainan don't have any early build (their first frame is LN73 ZA430 B-2728). Photo on the right is from grounding times, when Boeing stored normal production frames all around PAE.

For now there are 9 early frames stored on the RWY11-29, 8 terrible teens and LN22, last one frame from LN20-29 set which hasn't been reworked yet.

LN28 ZA232 VT-ANC on the flightline. You are looking at last early frame which will be delivered to original customer. It have to go inside paint hangar, cowlings aren't painted yet.

A Japan Airlines (JAL) operated Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet has made an emergency landing at Honolulu, Hawaii, due to a possible problem in its hydraulic system.
